Summary

The project SOSJelly intends to evaluate the feasibility of the development, manufacturing method, technological transfer and industrial scale-up and to third parties’ manufacturers, and licensing for commercialization of a completely new biosynthetic molecule or mix of molecules, with bio-mimetic properties, able to protect human skin from the jellyfish contact effects. The SOSJelly ingredient will be offered to manufacturers of sunscreens topic products, generally used by bathers and swimmers in sea location. SOS Jelly represents development and exploitation of ABICH investments in term of competences, studies and scientific and commercial relationship in recent years: the feasibility study is essential to properly evaluate opportunity and proficiency of further development of the project, up to the commercialization of the product and/or license; if confirmed, project outcomes could boost ABICH business, scaling up market reputation, development activities, revenues and company dimension.

Work performed

All expected tasks were achieved and objectives were fulfilled:
• Effectiveness of the various possible active ingredients were verified by in vivo test (anemones) and a specific vegetal extract was selected as the best active ingredient; some prototypes of topical formulation is developed and tested for human use and marine environment (skin acute toxicity, ecotoxicity, etc.); a further development plan of the product was defined (laboratory testing, pre-clinical and clinical trial test, etc.)
• Production technology of active ingredient and final product are selected
• Industrial scale-up is evaluated (make or licence strategy)
• Worldwide target market, enclosing existing competitors, and an initial marketing plan is defined; IPR plan is defined and first actions are started.
• Regulatory compliance on different selected markets existing IP constraints were verified and a certification plan is defined
• A comprehensive business plan is developed, including evaluation of expected revenues and estimation of production, marketing, IPR, communication and commercialization costs.

Final results

SOS Jelly formulation represents now a disruptive product for the target market, in term of efficacy, and health safety; high impact is expected on worldwide market of sun screen products, evaluated in 8.860 ml$/year, 2,937ml$ in the only Western Europe. SOS Jelly launch in the market could solve the problem of jellyfish sting, to 150 million persons exposed each year in the world.
