CoEXist’s DoA describes the project’s strategic aim is to bridge the gap between AV technology and transport and infrastructure planning by strengthening the capacities of urban road authorities to plan for the integration of AVs on the same network.
The bullet points below list the project objectives as described in section 1.1 of the DoA. For each objective, the major achievements during the first 18 months of CoEXist are summarised.
• To define requirements of stakeholders in the transition towards AV-ready transport and infrastructure planning;
• To develop and validate modelling tools that enable the transition towards AV-ready transport planning;
• To develop a hybrid infrastructure impact assessment tool that enables the transition towards AV-ready road infrastructure planning;
• To demonstrate CoEXist tools in road authorities;
• To ensure take-up and exploitation of CoEXist results through dissemination;
• To deliver a high-quality project.
The project achieved the following results within the first 18 months:
- D1.1 AV-ready framework (1st Version)
- D1.3 Completed specification templates for eight use cases and AV-ready alternative designs
- D1.4 Completed specification templates for four local scenarios and generic low/medium/high scenarios
- D2.1 Tested and calibrated control logic, AV-simulator and traffic simulator closed-loop connection (Software)
- D2.2 Technical Report on connecting AV control logic and AV simulator
- D2.3 Default behavioural parameter sets for AVs
- D2.4 AV-ready microscopic simulation tool (PTV Vissim extension) available for CoEXist partner cities
- D2.5 Guide for the simulation of AVs with microscopic modelling tool
- D2.6 Technical report on data collection and validation process
- D2.7 AV-ready macroscopic modelling tool
- D2.8 Guide for the simulation of AVs with macroscopic modelling tool (PTV Visum extension) available for CoEXist partner cities
- D3.1 Completed experimental setup templates for eight use cases and AV-ready alternative design
- D4.1 Baseline microscopic and macroscopic models
- D5.1 Communication and dissemination strategy
- D6.1 Data Management Plan
- D7.1 EPQ – Requirement No. 1
CoEXist has been working on contributing to a more efficient transition towards AVs and CVs using the same network by tackling the following key achievements:
• Develop a trans-disciplinary approach to the deployment of AVs on urban road networks by bringing together leading networks for vehicle research (iD4Car), road research (FEHRL) and urban mobility (Polis) to conduct a stakeholder engagement process with leading organisations in the field. The results will be summarised in an AV-ready framework for road authorities and will feed into the development of AV roadmaps (e.g. FEHRL Forever Open Roads).
• Extend the existing microscopic (Vissim) and macroscopic (Visum) simulation tools of the market leader in transport simulation models (PTV) by developing model-based default behavioural parameters for AVs with the control logics of leading organisations in the field of AV technology (Renault, Vedecom). The models are validated with real-life AVs on the public test track operated by TASS and Helmond.
• Create a new understanding of the impact AVs have on the road infrastructure by developing an impact assessment tool than can support the creation of the first AV-ready road infrastructure design recommendations (VTI).
• Prepare eight use cases representing a diverse set of road infrastructures and their context in four road authorities that are national AV champions (Gothenburg, Helmond, Milton Keynes and Stuttgart).
• Disseminate CoEXist activities (Polis) to ensure uptake and exploitation of project results.
