Summary

In public, the topic of corrosion usually only comes to the fore when a spectacular case of damage, such as the collapse of a bridge or the leakage of an oil pipeline, becomes known.
The subject of corrosion is enormously important for industry. In addition to image damage, corrosion usually also has serious economic consequences. A study published in 2009 by the World Corrosion Organisation (WCO) puts the annual cost of corrosion damage in industrialised countries at 3-4% of gross domestic product. This corresponds to 460-610 billion € /year for the entire EU. This makes it all the more important to optimally protect corrosion-sensitive products from corrosion.
Several options of corrosion protection, largely based on the particular requirements, exist to avoid costly corrosion damage. Especially during transport or when in storage, metallic products are exposed to extreme corrosive loads. To counteract these corrosive loads, a temporary corrosion protection is essential.
Our objective is to redesign existing packaging materials in such a way that the goods are protected from corrosion with a minimum of packaging materials and resources are conserved by saving unnecessary packaging materials.

Work performed

The research project was started in advance with the following objectives:
The development of the VCI based corrosion protection paper, which reliably protects a wide range of metals from non-ferrous metals to steel and cast iron against corrosion. This paper should not contain hazardous substances and no other solvents than water. These specifications allow a wide range of applications in the production, because all used materials are harmless.
The specified targets were largely met: A corrosion protection paper without the use of hazardous substances and without the use of other solvents than water could be maintained. The scope of corrosion protection includes non-ferrous metals, iron and steel. Cast iron cannot be adequately protected against corrosion with this formulation. Therefore, the project will be continued internally in order to protect this material from corrosion.

Final results

After completion of the research project, the final product will be superior to the current state of the art in terms of the scope of protection and the additives without hazardous substances used for this purpose.
