Summary

A new universe of video game tournament (called e-sports) has transformed dramatically the video game industry over the last two years. However, organising and participating in e-sports tournaments remain complicated for players and publishers. OXENT wanted to support and amplify this massive growth of e-sports by integrating an e-sports platform directly in top selling video games (so-called in-game approach).

The feasibility study aimed to assess three key levels:
1. Technical: Test in-game performance and improve design and ergonomics.
2. Economic: Define the business model through meetings with global publishers and potential business partners
3. Legal: Identify data collection legal issues and the opportunity to protect our knowledge.

Work performed

During the 6-month period of the feasibility study, design and development of our API has taken longer than expected. We had in-depth reflection on effect of the technological structure of the API and its safety to leave on a solid foundation.

At the beginning of March 2015, members of Oxent went to the United States to meet the main publishers. Including meetings in Europe, Oxent had the opportunities to gather 14 interests and comments about Toornament services.

We performed a deep Freedom to Operate analysis regarding existing patent, registration legal issues relating to data collection and patent opportunities.

Final results

The six-month-period of the feasibility study was very instructive for the development of Toornament. We met studios and game developers, but also strategic partners potential. This allowed us to refine our strategy.
Each interlocutor understood the interest to have this functionality integrated in his game. The explosion hearings e-sports and its media coverage helped the actors understand the potential of our market.

Based on technical, economical and legal inputs, our will to pursue the project is confirmed and strengthened.
