The actual emergency systems are based on old-fashioned telecommunication technologies that cannot cope with the new IP-based services that the European citizens use every day. Some of these limitations include,
• Media limitation: currently only voice calls and sometimes SMS are accepted.
• No advanced features: such as caller location.
• No integration of social media.
• The eCall technology is based on the GSM, which limits the amount of emergency data to be sent.
The objectives of the EMYNOS project can be summarized as the design and development of a common Next Generation emergency platform that addresses the limitations of today\'s Emergency Systems while using standard technologies for (1) audio/video/real time text provision, (2) location configuration, (3) and support for persons with disabilities. The EMYNOS project is important to the European society as it considers the improvement of the security and safety of the European citizens particularly through the synchronization between the rapid progress in internet based technologies and the actual systems providing vital services such as emergency services.
WP1
• Project handbook, and deliverables related to data protection and data export were delivered.
• A project web site, a mailing list, a conferencing system, and a wiki/BSCW server are in place.
WP2
In the reporting period, WP2 produced Three deliverables (D2.1, D2.3, D2.2) related to the EMYNOS framework architecture. Deliverable D2.3 collected and analysed the requirements (based for instance on existing standards, end user expectations), described the related state of the art, and listed some scenarios that EMYNOSt is addressing. Deliverable D2.1 outlines the overall architecture. The main achievements of D2.1 include:
• A simple description of the architecture.
• It considers most of the location configuration mechanisms discussed already in the standardization bodies.
• It specifies the use of both SIP and WebRTC.
• It specifies total conversation (audio, video, real time text).
• It highlights the position of EMYNOS with respect to existing standards such as EENA NG112 LTD document.
• It specifies how sensor data is transmitted in a SIP communication.
Deliverable D2.2 refines the EMYNOS architecture. The main achievements of this activity include:
• It considers both pure SIP and IMS.
• It considers network based location configuration, and reliability mechanisms.
• it discusses security in IP based emergency services.
• It considers the position of EMYNOS with respect to ETSI NOVES and the EC Mandate M493.
WP3
WP3 implements the EMYNOS components and architecture specified in WP2. Based on the input from WP2, the software architecture, components and modules development plan was defined. in the first phase of WP3 which was successfully concluded with D3.1, providing a first release of the EMYNOS SW architecture. The components are developed in the respective tasks of this WP.
WP4
The objective of WP4 is to integrate, evaluate and demonstrate the components developed in WP3. This WP will build and deploy an amalgam of testbeds and pilot sites. In the first reporting period, WP4 produced D4.1 that discusses the Key Performance Indicators, evaluation methodology and testing procedures for the assessment of EMYNOS. A reference testbed hosting the EMYNOS network components was deployed in TEIC premises. This testbed has been utilized for connecting with the ETSI NG112 Emergency Communications Plugtest infrastructure.
WP5
Dissemination plan: the dissemination plan was prepared and submitted in accordance with the DOW.
Establishement and maintainance of the project’s website: PSCE and Fraunhofer have developed the EMYNOS website. The address is www.emynos.eu.

Social media: Since the beginning, EMYNOS has been actively using its Twitter account in the context of the stakeholder engagement strategy process detailed in WP5. More information is available here: https://twitter.com/eu_emynos
Press releases and EMYNOS Newsletters: As part of its engagement strategy, the consortium prepared and published regular news articles and three issues of the EMYNOS newsletters.
Participation in third-party workshops and conferences: EMYNOS partners actively participated (i.e. presented papers, presentations and posters or contributed to the proceedings).
Progress beyond the SoTA
Producing an open-source working prototype for the emergency services through standardized protocols and architectures (SIP, IMS and WebRTC): The EMYNOS project is developing an open environment that will allow technology and solution providers to test their Internet Protocol-based 112 emergency communication solutions. A first step in this direction is reflected for instance by the traffic traces that were delivered in the context of the ETSI NG112 plugtest 2017 to some companies and research institutes to check them against their components functioning.
Interoperability: The EMYNOS project has been putting a special focus on interoperability tests in order to validate its implementation against industrial solutions. This is reflected by the presence of the EMYNOS consortium in two successive ETSI NG112 plugtests events in 18 months.. Through these tests, the EMYNOS implementation aims to be a reference for whoever wants to validate its solution.
Expected Impact
Smarter digital society: By synchronizing between the huge progresses in internet based technologies and the current emergency system, the EMYNOS project aims at moving towards a smart digital society where citizens (or sensors on behalf of humans) can inform about an emergency through, voice, video and text. To achieve this, EMYNOS is combining between IP based emergency services and IoT
Modernizing emergency systems for better lives saving: By implementing a Next Generation eCall for instance, the EMYNOS project aims at enabling the communication channel between the vehicle and the PSAP with audio, video and sensors data. This will play a crucial role in the dispatch process and the warnings of the population, which is the area where the accident occurred. Indeed, pulling sensors data from a vehicle transporting dangerous goods will significantly help in taking a decision about the evacuation process.
Improving security of the European citizens: Using warning systems and social media (separately or combined) enables the citizens to remain aware of their surroundings and create a high level of vigilance. For instance, the citizens in a certain area where an emergency has occurred can be notified either through Apps, or by receiving an SMS, or even by seeing a warning message displayed over DVB-T on their TV monitors if they are at home.
Social impacts: Although, a special focus is on people with disabilities, EMYNOS also accommodates other social categories such as elderly persons and people with haptics. This is reflected by the combination of IoT and emergency services through the use of sensors platforms and smartwatches.
Boosting new aspects in the European market: In order to enable European companies and research institutes to have shares in the emergency services market, some prototypes based on the most recent standards are being implemented. These prototypes are also tested (within the ETSI NG112 plugtests events) against commercial solutions for validity purposes.
