Summary

Re-Industrialisation of the European Union 2016 (REinEU2016) was the international conference held due to the Slovak presidency of the Council of the EU focusing on the topics of nanotechnologies, advanced materials, manufacturing and processing, and biotechnology. The event, implemented under the Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme (NMBP), emphasized and discussed the role of science, research and innovation in sustainable development of the European economy in general and the implementation of the re-industrialisation of Europe.

The objective of the conference Re- Industrialisation of the European Union 2016 was to highlight and discuss the role of research and innovation in economic development in general, and the agenda of re-industrialisation in particular.

The three day conference brought together a wide range of stakeholders, from public research institutions, through innovative start-ups and SMEs, to large corporations to offer them expert discussions on the role of innovation in re-industrialisation in Europe focusing on the intersection between novel technologies, approaches, etc. and traditional industries.

In order to tackle both key research and innovation areas, the conference programme combined both vertical and horizontal priorities – focus on the NMBP areas and topics of smart specialisation, social impact of re-industrialisation, or impact of NMBP on re-structuring the EU industry.

The proposed objective was attained through a number of activities including 27 thematic sessions, presentation of innovative companies through exhibition, poster session and visits to successful local companies and matchmaking session. To engage also public as an important stakeholder a number of outreach activities were organised – a round of lectures in universities across Slovakia and a competition of student radios.

One of the main outcomes of the conference was the publication of a policy document under the name of “Bratislava Agenda: A call for a European Industrial Revolution to Re-industrialise Europe” including a roadmap with timing of concrete steps.
The objective was to follow up on the “Amsterdam declaration” – a strategic document of the common initiative of Dutch and Slovak presidency to the EU Council concerning research and innovations that was the result of the Industrial Technologies Conference in Amsterdam in June 2016.

This document was reviewed during the Slovak presidency concerning the needs of new member countries and has received its final shape at the Bratislava conference with active participation of the European and international community of researchers, innovators, industry and SMEs representatives. The material will serve as a base for the Maltese presidency that will hold the Presidency of the Council of the European Union in the first semester of 2017.

The project was implemented by consortia consisting of the Slovak Centre of Scientific and Technical Information, Neulogy and BIC Bratislava. REinEU2016 took place from 26th to 28th October 2016 in Bratislava, Slovakia.
