Sharing Cities is committed to developing common solutions to shared challenges.
We are empowering cities to explore and exploit the potential of smart technologies (sensors, mobility and data integration) in order to improve city services, support innovative new businesses and deliver a better quality of life for everyone. We have done this by developing and deploying replicable smart solutions for challenges that all cities face in regards to energy, transport and the built environment. We are demonstrating how the digital and human aspects of these measures can bring economic and environmental benefits to any city in Europe. We are engaged with investors in order to line up funding for future procurement. We are working closely with the EIP-SCC Marketplace as well as other Lighthouse programmes to explore multiple collaborative approaches. By focusing on shared opportunities we can co-design innovation, aggregate demand to attract investment and develop scalable and viable smart solutions for the cities that we live in.
In order to develop solutions that are scalable we have worked hard to ensure that the technology we design and implement meets the needs of the city. We have done this through engagement and collaboration, for example co-creating use cases that can be used by a variety of stakeholders. We have carried out user-centered design activities that explore how the end user will interact with the smart measures we are creating and we have co-designed the measures with a range of partners, including city governments, businesses and citizens. This approach has resulted in our measures being successfully implemented and scale up taking place immediately, due to business models that help to resolve shared problems and that can be replicated.
The measures we have implemented focus on three main areas - people, place and platform and we have adopted a ‘digital first’ approach to all three. For example, supported by an urban sharing platform, we have retrofitting technology to buildings in order to make them more energy efficient. This includes the groundbreaking retrofit of Lisbon\'s City Hall, an iconic and important national building, where we have demonstrated the benefits of retrofitting historical buildings. We have the UK\'s first public housing estate heated by the Thames in London. Across the retrofit measures we are seeing a 60% reduction in energy use. We are aggregating and sharing data between multiple partners to enable predictive analytics, leading to effective urban planning and more efficient energy operations which contribute a further 10% in energy savings. We are promoting a shift away from petrol and diesel engines by implementing shared digitally enabled e-mobility which is proving very popular. In Lisbon alone, an additional 1,500 bikes have been purchased as a result of our trial. We have deployed 2,400 smart lampposts with LED lighting, parking sensors and environmental monitors. We are sharing good practice amongst the cities and stakeholders on citizen participation and how we can innovate together.
Sharing Cities is committed to creating a positive legacy from the funding that we have received. We want to drive value out of every single euro that we spend and to that end we have set ourselves ten audacious goals that we aim to achieve.
Chief among these is the commitment to use our €24 million in EU funding to trigger €500 million investment through procuring common solutions at scale. We have already engaged with over 100 cities across Europe and continue to drive this number upwards by identifying other cities that would seek to co-design and potentially jointly procure common solutions. To this end we have also played a key role in engaging with our fellow Lighthouse programmes to coordinate our efforts. A critical mass of demand attracts investors and industry, generates economies of scale, delivers more confidence in solutions that are faster to market and delivers bigger returns on investment.
We would like to invite you to become a part of Sharing Cities and the journey we are on. If you are a city, a business or an investor and are interested in getting involved, we invite you to visit our website and sign up to our Knowledge Sharing Platform http://www.sharingcities.eu/sharingcities/knowledge-platform, or just get in touch via twitter @CitiesSharing.
By demonstrating the financial and environmental value of urban innovation to residents, businesses and municipalities we want to change the way that we think about sustainable development and guide smart city technology into the mainstream.
This is what we mean by creating common solutions to shared challenges.
