Summary

The European Researchers\' Night in Bosnia and Herzegovina (RiNG-16-17) aim is to bring researchers closer to the general public and to shape deeper connection between research and entrepreneurship. RiNG-16-17 will increase awareness of research and innovation potentials in BiH, support public recognition of researchers and promote achievements by local scientists and research-driven entrepreneurs, address research impact people’s daily life, and encourage young people to embark on research careers. Shortly, main objectives are:
- Enhance researchers’ public recognition;
- Increase awareness about research results, especially regarding the daily lives of citizens;
- Stimulate interest in research careers, in particular amongst young people facing a career choice.

RiNG-16-17 slogan is “research and innovation – two sides of the same coin”. RiNG-16-17 is a Researchers’ Night of national character, involving coordinated actions in six cities in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and incorporates cross-border aspect by involving researchers and research-driven business from the Balkan region as participants in RiNG activities. RiNG-16-17 specific objectives are:
- Increase awareness about science and research in Bosnia and Herzegovina;
- Forge the connection between science and entrepreneurship;
- Illustrate the fun and fascinating aspects of research;
- Stress the societal importance of research including for citizens’ daily lives and well-being;
- Point out the importance of European support in favour of researchers and research and stressing the importance of European and international cooperation in research.

RiNG-16-17 quantitative targets per event/year are:
- Number of people to be reached through awareness raising campaign in BiH: 350.000;
- Expected number of direct attendees to organized events in whole BiH: 15.000.

Thus, RiNG-16-17 is aiming to reach 700.000 people and involve 30.000 participants in the organized events during 2016-2017 period, organizing two European Researchers’ Nights in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Work performed

\"In 2016 RiNG achieved following:

- Conception, production and display of promotional material: flyers, posters, programmes…
- Airing of promotional spots on radio and TV stations, respectively mobilising 350.000 and one million people;
- Publication of articles, announcements interviews in written press (approximate reach 185.000 people);
- Organisation of 2 press conferences, namely in Sarajevo (28 September) and Banja Luka (29 September);
- Pre-events, amongst which flash mob in Sarajevo and Banja Luka;
- Revamping, constant updating and maintenance of project website nocistrazivaca.ba;
o 6.841 unique visitors on project website;
o 30.598 visits on portals publishing the information and stories on European Researchers Night in Sarajevo.
- Revamping, constant updating and maintenance of social network profiles (Facebook, Twitter), in particular Facebook very effective towards people aged 18-34;
- 369.982 views of pages associated with RING content;
- Over 1.000.000 people made aware of the European Researchersµ4night and its objectives.

- Offer of the 101 activities as described in the Gran Agreement Annex I, part B, distributed as follows, amongst 23 venues in 6 cities (Sarajevo, Banja Luka, Mostar, Bijeljina, Gorazde, Travnik):
o Sarajevo: 35;
o Banja Luka: 28;
o Mostar: 17;
o Bijeljina: 10;
o Gorazde: 5;6
o Travnik: 6;

- Active involvement of 449 researchers (261 in Sarajevo, 95 in Banja Luka, 45 in Mostar, 18 in Bijeljina, 5 in Gorazde and 6 in Travnik), of whom:
o 1 having benefitted from MSC actions;
o 64 having benefitted from another EU support;

- Active involvement of about 1.500 people in the implementation of the activities (researchers, innovators, exhibitors, \"\"edutainers\"\", lecturers, volunteers…)

- 17.510 visitors having taken part in the activities offered, distributed as follows:
o Sarajevo: 6.500;
o Banja Luka: 6.000;
o Mostar: 3.500;
o Bijeljina: 500;
o Gorazde: 500;
o Travnik: 150\"

Final results

Impact assessment:
- Collection, analysis and processing of 742 feedbacks of which 399 prior the event and 343 during and after the event;
- Conduction of 303 face to face interviews (40,8%) in Banja Luka, of which 161 (21,7%) prior the event and 142 (19,1%) during the event, in Sarajevo and Mostar, 203 interviews (27,4%) of which 101 prior the event (13,6%) and 102 (13,7%) during the event and in Bijeljina, 114 interviews (15,4%), of which 76 (10,2%) prior the event and 38 (5,1%) post event;

Main conclusions:
- Typology of respondents: 44,7% male and 55,3% female;
- Overall positive feedback about the events themselves (activities, interest, contacts with researches, concrete organisation, schedule, venues and locations);
- Most successful activities: those with a high interactivity character, such as high school Competition, interactive activities and workshops for children, star gazing and mobile planetarium, counselling and information about international education and careers, interactive experiments (forensics, chemistry, archaeology) and science Fair, quizzes, games and competitions; with focus on the activities addressing children and high school students;
- Increased awareness about the importance of the role of scientists (69%);
- improved public opinion about science and scientists;
- Opinion on scientist: cultivated (over 90%); hard working (over 83%), clever (over 92%);
- Consideration of the scientists\' lives as very interesting and reduction of the usual stereotypes about scientists (predominantly elderly people who are extraordinarily strange or eccentric, living in their own world…);
- General will expressed to attend a future similar event (88%);
- Intention to recommend the participation in similar events to friends or families (87%);
