Summary

Advanced Sports Installations Europe AS (ASIE), a company with over 20-years of experience in synthetic grass fields, has developed the first on-site recycling solution that enables complete used synthetic grass recycling and materials reuse for environmental and economic sustainability.
We aim to achieve a zero-waste concept and improve the environmental sustainability of synthetic grass installations. Our unique ARENA concept enables to eliminate current landfilling and reuse 100% of the materials in new fields or as recycled raw materials in other industries.
Our overall objective in the SME-Instrument´s phase-2 project is to finalise our technological development, conduct thorough pilot-tests for ARENA concept market validation, to improve our service model and make preparations for large market uptake in targeted markets from 2019.
Our efforts in the first half of the project (M1-M12, from July 2016 to June 2017) have been concentrated on technological development of the different ARENA concept tools, controlled environment and actual field tests, pre-planning of the service and logistics database and extensive dissemination and commercialisation of ASIE´s technology, synthetic grass recycling and reuse concept and the SME projects success.

Work performed

The first project year has concentrated on technical development, testing and dissemination. We have reached to final development stage with most ARENA concept key tools – e.g. the turf removal, infill reclaim, infill separation and cleaning and other modules.
All tests and pilot projects have proceeded as planned or even exceeded our initial performance goals. In the second year, we will fine-tune the equipment, integrate the whole mobile and modular ARENA line and carry out several pilot tests in different regions and conditions.
We have also put a lot of effort into our commercialisation activities. Through our own demo event in Tallinn and several industry fairs, we have connected with new cooperation partners and other stakeholders. Our technology has also been approved by FIFA and we have met a large interest from other industries that could use purified artificial grass components for new products.

Final results

ARENA project is in schedule to achieve all planned impacts. Foremost, our unique equipment will increase used synthetic turf reinstallation and recycling globally. Also, our 50% faster field renewal speed and up to 50% lower cost of the work makes artificial grass fields´ sustainable EOL management more accessible for field owners.
Our field tests with improved equipment show that we exceed the state-of-the-art level and can provide a full service range with lowest impact on the field and fastest project delivery time at the market. Also, our equipment improves used turf and infill reuse potential significantly, being able to separate all materials on-site and clean them for reuse in new fields or other industries.
Our extended services and new business models make high-quality artificial grass fields more accessible, thus improving sporting and leisure opportunities in EU and abroad.
