Summary

General aviation still presents a high number of accidents. Most them are known as Controlled Flight into Terrain (CFIT), accidents in which the pilot unintentionally flies an airworthy aircraft into the ground or water. According to international aviation agencies between 1979 and 1990, nearly 45% of all accidents resulted from CFIT, from which 80% were GA aircraft. Furthermore, 75% of CFIT triggers the deaths of all occupants.
The Flight Safety Foundation in 2010 found that 38% of all accidents were likely or highly likely to have been prevented if the pilot had a head-up display (HUD). A HUD is a device placed above the cockpit in front of the windshield that projects on semi-transparent screen crucial information of all phases of the flight based in on-board sensors and radio-navigation system.
Several commercial products are available and widespread in general aviation for all these devices except for HUDs. With Phase 1 and further development we aim to bring to the market GalaHD, that will be the first certified Head-up display (HUD) with an affordable price for general aviation. Our device will prevent the lack of spatial and situational awareness of the pilot and therefore will increase safety for general aviation flights.

Work performed

We have designed and established the specifications to achieve the commercial prototype during Phase 2. We have also performed a risk and mitigation analysis, a freedom to operate study, and we have set our objective market and our route for commercialization in general aviation.
The main conclusion is the change of the key players involved in the consortium, from the former two companies, Asteravia and Aerlyper, into three companies: including now Globavia.
As a second one, is the budget of over €3,5 million and a duration of 24 months. The financial analysis results of our FS, considering estimated revenues of €41.02 Mio after 5 years of commercialization and the previous investment, indicates a ROI of 4.64 and a payback of 24 months. We aim to achieve these estimated sales thanks to the creation of 14 positions, including Engineers and our Sales and Administrative force.

Final results

The current prototype is in TRL7.With the commercial GalaHD prototype, after Phase 2 we expect to contribute to the reduction of human casualties during landing and take-off. GalaHD will impact on the pilot losses of control in both critical stages of the flights.
