Summary

Aquaculture is the most efficient way of producing animal protein! Global production has grown steadily and the European production outside the EU, during the past 10 years, has been more successful than that in the EU.

BlueAquality aims to enhance competitiveness and expand EU production by introducing an “Industry-Wide-Computing” metasystem that can collect data from and give advantages to all concerned with aquaculture:
Users can be fish farms, their suppliers, the purchasers of fish produced, processors, retailers, regulatory authorities, certification bodies, veterinarians etc.

Work performed

The feasibility study concludes that there is a solid basis for the project, and that with some outside funding during an initial period it is entirely feasible.
The feasibility study has investigated:
1. the attitude of the above users to the project.
2. the size and nature of the market.
3. possible benefits for major participants and the value of these benefits.
4. economic and other aspects of the introduction of BlueAquality.
5. economic and other aspects of operation of BlueAquality.

Representatives of all groups of users have expressed interest in the project, and have shown willingness to participate and contribute in any way they can.

Initially the market will be Europe, since the project is well suited to facilities using a higher level of technology, and there is a large volume of this type of production in Europe.

All users will obtain benefits from the automation of administrative functions, fish farms and others will obtain benefits from improved best practice. An example of this will also be lower environmental loading due to better feed use.

The value of such benefits for a fish farm is estimated to be significant – several percent of the production value.

External funding is needed during an introductory phase. After 1 to 2 years’ operation a profit should be realized.

Final results

The study also finds that the BlueAquality is exceptional in that it follows “Industry 4.0”, where data and automation are used to achieve advances in manufacturing technologies. BlueAquality, however, lifts “Industry 4.0” to “Aquaculture 4.0”, achieving advances in the production of a high protein food, i.e. fish, that can be done using less feed, less water and with smaller environmental impact than any other production of edible protein. Improving and expanding aquaculture production will also create jobs in rural areas.
