Summary

The CASEK project had a lofty goal. CASEK aims to bring advanced methodologies (developed in the parent project, Cassting) for solving societal and business problems to a larger audience of less-specialized developers so that they can use these methodologies to solve real problems and deliver real solutions to a broad audience. These real problems include energy efficiency, to mention one of many. The advanced methodologies have a huge potential to affect positive social change and generate new business opportunities, but they are difficult for non-specialists to understand and use. We need tools to ease that pain, and this is where the CASEK project comes in.

The way that CASEK proposed to reach this lofty goal was the creation of a new software platform, Wappsto, which not only allows developers to create and distribute data-driven web applications with automations, but also to use the advanced methodologies. The objectives achieved in the CASEK project were to solidify a business and marketing plan, to develop a viable Wappsto product, and to engage with and learn from the market in the pursuit of these objectives.

Work performed

During the CASEK project, we have focused on two aspects to support our ambition: business and technology. The business focus had as its objective to solidify a business and marketing plan. The technology focus had as its objective to develop a viable product offering. In both cases, the main thrust of the work was the development of Wappsto, currently in public beta and freely available at wappsto.com.

Work on the business focus of CASEK involved developing and testing the marketing approach which was done through participation in a series of events, as outlined in the publicly available deliverable D1.2, Market Engagement Report. The result is a business plan that solves the so-called ‘chicken-or-egg’ problem of how to garner a digital-platform-user-base through driving end-users via the related Seluxit IoT Platform.

Work on the technology focus included integration with Aalborg University’s UPPAAL software surrounding the use case of making a ‘wapp’ for advanced control of floor heating, as outlined in the publicly available deliverable D4.2, Marketplace Demonstrator Report. The result is two-tiered. Wappsto as a product is in a TRL 5, whereas Wappsto demonstrating the general form of an integration to the Cassting framework, set out as a goal for the project, is in a considerably earlier state (TRL 2) and merits further development.

Final results

Wappsto, in its role as a vehicle for the Cassting project results, is a unique product that has an enormous impact potential. With Wappsto, things and services, including UPPAAL services representing the advanced methodologies of the Cassting project, can be combined. Moreover, data can be securely shared, making Wappsto a datamarket with an integrated appstore. You can sell your data, buy my data, and use it in meaningful applications.
