Summary

Safe drinking water, or potable water, is a basic need for human well-being and the right of every individual. Yet, the availability of water varies greatly across countries, and even when present it is unclear in many cases whether it is safe for human consumption. Appropriate water for human consumption is free of physical, chemical, and biological pollutants and can be employed for multiple purposes (drinking, bathing, and cooking). A significant amount of disease could be prevented through access to safe water supply, adequate sanitation services and better hygiene practices. Indeed, every year more than 1.4 million people die as a result of water related diseases. Most of the victims are young children, the vast majority of whom die of illnesses caused by organisms that thrive in water sources contaminated by raw sewage. Our goal at HELIOZ is to provide low income households sustainable solutions for safe drinking water.

Work performed

To reach market readiness we have evaluated the technical, commercial and financial viability. The conducted feasibility study gave us further insight in the technical details and cost estimates required to introduce the solution in the market (currently in prototype from). For this purpose and according to the work plan set in phase 1 we had conducted the following tasks: 1) Evaluation of the Technical Feasibility (optimisation of the device and during production and risk identification), 2) Analysis of the Commercial Feasibility (analysis of potential market for water disinfection and corporate social responsibility, expansion of contact network and exploitation strategy) and 3) Assessment of the Financial Feasibility (including a cost benefit analysis, investment and budget for market launch and a 5 year forecast to asses the return of investment).

Final results

WADI can impact positively human lives across countries by providing a reliable method to obtain drinkable water. Access to safe drinking water impacts profoundly households and communities in multiple ways; reduction of waterborne diseases, less costs for medical treatments, less premature deaths, higher productivity and education, time gain, Money savings (reduction on medical bills, less wood purchased), Non-economic benefits for the individuals like, dignity, social status, cleanliness and overall well-being, Lowering CO2 emissions, deforestation and indoor pollution and fulfils UN Sustainable Development Agenda and Goals on Sustainable Development.
