Summary

\"5GTANGO: 5G Development and Validation Platform for global Industry-specific Network Services and Apps

5GTANGO puts forth the flexible programmability of 5G networks with:

1) A NFV-enabled Service Development Kit (SDK) to support developers with the creation of innovative Virtual Network Functions (VNF)/Network Services (NS)
2) A Validation and Verification (V&V) Platform with advanced mechanisms for VNF/NS testing and qualification
3) A modular Service Platform with a MANO (Management and Orchestration) framework to manage the full life-cycle of VNF/NS.

The combination of the proposed toolkit, the V&V platform and the Service Platform realises an extended multi-modal NFV DevOps (Development and Operations) model between service developers, telecom operators and vertical industries, increasing operational efficiency, facilitating the implementation and validation of new services and accelerating the adoption of NFV technologies.

Core objectives include:

- Reduce the time-to-market for networked services by shortening the service development cycle and by qualifying those network services to be adopted.
- Enable new business opportunities with the customisation and adaptation of the network to vertical application´s requirements.
- Reduce the entry barrier to 3rd party developers and support the creation and composition of Virtual Network Functions (VNFs) and application elements as \"\"Network Services\"\".
- Accelerate the NFV uptake in industry via an \'extended\' DevOps model and the validation at scale of Network Service capabilities of the 5GTANGO platform in vertical show cases.

Work performed

The 5GTANGO project relies and extends the excellent work performed by the 5G-PPP phase I project SONATA (http://sonata-nfv.eu/).

Some of the 5GTANGO components are directly inherited from SONATA, other components have been drastically redesigned, streamlined and customized during this period in order to cope with the new requirements of the 5GTANGO project, while some others are being developed specially focusing on the need of supporting testing, validation and verification of VFN/NS.

The SDK extended its strengths, modularity and applicability towards different target platforms, and increased its stability as well as its toolset. New features for the Service Platform include the support of Service Level Agreements (SLAs), the policy-driven approach, or the network slicing, just to name the most relevant. The main innovation introduced by 5GTANGO, the V&V Platform, is one of the key functionalities that will help shorten the critical time to market for services via automation of testing; while this version of the V&V focuses on implementing the basic test workflow, future deliveries will expand on the functionality.

5GTANGO is an open source project. Its source code is published under Apache v2.0 licence in a public GitHub repository, freely available for download and ready to be installed with full rights for adoption, modification and distribution. As SONATA is today a reference on the ETSI NFV Management and Orchestration landscape, the first software release of the project has been delivered under the SONATA trademark (SONATA 4.0 powered by 5GTANGO). 5GTANGO contributions are expected to improve substantially SONATA\'s recognition, making this software popular, lasting for many years, far beyond the project lifetime. Access to the latest code release, SONATA 4.0 powered by 5GTANGO, and related documentation is available on the project website: https://5gtango.eu/

Final results

With its outcomes, 5GTANGO is contributing to the Work Programme expected impact as foreseen:

• Open environments for creation of network apps: 5GTANGO supports the full lifecycle of network services by providing an end-to-end ecosystem for their creation (SDK and programming model), qualification (V&V Platform) and agile deployment (service platform with orchestrator). 5GTANGO´s programmability model and SDK simplifies the creation of complex network services. The 5GTANGO V&V Platform provides an experimental innovation environment for 5G third-party services that facilitates the integration of various players delivering parts of a service and where collaboration from different industries can enrich the operators´ own portfolio.
• Open repository of network apps that may be validated and leveraged by third party developers: The SDK allows developers to populate their services and performs a battery of automated validation & verification tests through the V&V Platform that will guarantee the requirements from service providers. This enables an environment for third parties to come together, create innovative services and generate new revenues. It is also an opportunity for SMEs and developers to experiment their applications on open experimental network platforms and to create 5G open source repositories.
• Validation at scale of the VNF aggregation capability of the proposed environment: 5GTANGO provides an end-to-end, scalable and customizable ecosystem for a variety of verticals and underlying network stacks of different technologies, simulating the foreseen market outlook of future 5G software network deployments. Three pilots (Smart Manufacturing, Immersive media and Real Time Communications) will provide end-to-end demonstrator of the full validation ecosystem.

5GTANGO is also contributing to the following 5GPPP KPIs:

- Reducing the average service creation time cycle from 90 hours to 90 minutes.
- European availability of a competitive industrial offer for 5G systems and technologies.
- Target SME participation under this initiative commensurate with an allocation of more than 20% of the total public funding.

Regarding economic and business impact, 5GTANGO provides and end-to-end ecosystem that helps to open the telecom market to new players, encouraging the creation and growth of start-ups in the sector. It enables the NFV value proposition of service agility as it stresses communication, collaboration and integration between developers and operations professionals, shortening the development cycles and the time to market. The 5GTANGO´s programmability model and SDK is an entry point into the telecom market, as simplifies the creation of complex network services, contributing to lower the barrier to entry into the Telecom market to new developers, including SMEs. The 5GTANGO V&V Platform will also widen the market as guarantees the minimum of quality required by network operators, who will then open the door to a wider variety of partners. It enables network operators to give controlled access to real or virtual network resources. Finally, the 5GTANGO service Platform is 5G by design and has the potential to support and accommodate the diverse connectivity needs of vertical industries.

5GTANGO also contributes to societal challenges by boosting the fast and cost effective access to a wide variety of new and innovative services and applications to all European citizens.
