Summary

Electrical energy needs to be transmitted and distributed from the point of generation to the point of use in the most cost-effective way, taking into account the geographical, topographical and political barriers between those two points. Aging infrastructure, the rise of renewable energy sources (RES) and continuous increase in energy demand necessitate an expanded and upgraded power transmission grid that better interconnects cities and nations across Europe and globally, which are increasingly dependent on secure and reliable power supply. Electrical energy is difficult and expensive to store except on a very local and usually low power basis. As a result, electricity is normally generated in “real-time” and transmitted directly from the point of generation to the point of use by means of Transmission and Distribution (T&D) lines. To overcome this, Enertechnos has produced CTS, a breakthrough and potentially disruptive technology. It is the first fundamental change to power cable geometry and fabrication in decades, whilst still leveraging existing cable-manufacturing technology. During the phase 2 innovation project, Enertechnos will focus on upgrading and qualifying the CTS ready for in-field deployment. The trial will be used to validate the technology with a cable manufacturer and grid operator.

Work performed

Enertechnos undertook a full analysis of both the technical and business potential of the Capacitive Transfer System (CTS) concluding that it would be highly valuable for the commercial industry. Enertechnos reviewed the results achieved with their initial testing to identify needed improvements to be made during the Phase 2 project. Specifically, they defined the necessary upgrades to the design and manufacturing process necessary for maximum power transmission efficiency and high capacitance. The company used the feasibility study to scout potential cable companies to participate in the assembly and in field demonstration of the CTS.

Final results

The expected outcome of the project is to successfully execute the market validation and demonstrate that the value of highly efficient transmission cable for power delivery improvement and performance optimization. The easy to integrate manufacturing process, wide range of applications, and extremely high current carrying capabilities will enable scalable and simplistic production to any cable manufacturer at global level. The CTS development will boost economic growth and create jobs within Enertechnos.
