Summary

Mass implementation of renewable power sources is a firm decision that the EU has already made. To scale up the integration of renewable sources into the grid it is necessary to implement large-scale energy storage solutions. H2 produced through water electrolysis (green H2) is widely recognized as a promising option for storing large quantities of renewable electricity over longer periods. It can also benefit from the potential discounts on the power price of surplus clean energy. One of the applications for the green H2 generated consists in the production of biomethane out of raw biogas through a methanation process with CoMeth. The biomethane created can be injected and stored in the existing NG transport facilities or used in NG vehicles. The generation of green H2 and its use for the methanation of raw biogas to produce biomethane with CoMeth are the cornerstones of a fully renewable Power to Gas (P2G) scheme or Green P2G. Green P2G accelerates the transition of the whole current energy scheme to a renewable one eliminating the need of fossil fuels.

Work performed

The technical work packages will lead to the creation of the CoMeth pilot plant with around 1 MW by optimizing and scaling the design of the current prototypes. The pilot plant will be tested at the early adopter’s facilities (biogas or sewage plant) and the required certification will be obtained. The market analysis demonstrates its commercial viability in the biogas market and the integration with the H2 economy. Competitors in and out the EU have been studied, market barriers for the introduction in the biogas sector have been identified and mechanisms have been set to overcome them. 4 market introduction risks and 5 project implementation risks have been detected and assessed and we have concluded that these risks can be managed. After a deep patent search, 3 patents of interest have been analyzed concluding that the invention is still intact and the chance of granting a patent application exists. Summing up, this Feasibility Study demonstrates that the CoMeth innovation can be presented in a phase II proposal to obtain a phase II Horizon 2020 SME grant.

Final results

The economic study confirms the economic feasibility of the project: TKE sales will be increased substantially and the number of employees will be increased by 45 in 5 years. CoMeth will enable the implementation of the Green P2G scheme and will accelerate the transition to a green economy.
