Summary

The objective addressed by the project was to know the feasibility to scale up the Xerolutions Technology and to analyse the viability of the Xerolutions business project focus on mobile energy sources. In order to achieve this purpose, following tasks were made to obtain rational conclusions about the continuity of the project:
- Deep study of current production method used in pilot plant.
- Preliminary design of pre-industrial plant and investment study including cost analysis of equipment and installations and the operation and maintenance costs.
- A Business Case including a financial study analysing indicators such as NPV, IRR, and investment return time. To do this, Xerolutions took in consideration the results of investment study. Moreover, an analysis of the target market was made to determine the forecast sales, and the strengths and weakness about the protection level of Xerolutions Industrial Property were analysed.

Work performed

Thanks to the grant from SME instrument phase I, Xerolutions was able to assess the scaling up and economic feasibility of its innovation in the supercapacitor (SC) market. It has also allowed to determine the real investment needs and the profitability for potential investors. Additionally, the Strategic Vision of the Company has been improved from the intellectual property point of view and product positioning, identifying the right potential customers. In conclusion, the current project has demonstrated that Xerolutions’ innovation has the potential to be developed to the ready-to-market level, but requires additional funding in view of commercialisation, so Xerolutions will intend to apply for SME Instruments phase II in April 2016.

Final results

In the light of the findings, the scaling up of the Xerolutions technology is entirely feasible from a technical and economic point of view. We expect to produce our engineered active materials by a mass technology through the execution of the SME Instrument phase II. In this way, the most serious drawback of the SCs (low energy storage capacity) will be significantly improved, and this kind of devices will become a reality turning into the big player in the global search for reliable green energy. Enhancing the SCs technical capabilities, it will achieve to encourage technologies like hybrid or electrical automotive, renewable energies and so on, which make the European economy less energy-consuming and more climate-friendly.
