The SME Instrument Phase 1 project WITRO has performed a feasibility study of a radar based wind and turbulence sensor for use in wind energy applications. The objectives of the project has been to define a market and product strategy, verify the technical viability of the technology and design a plan for an pilot project.
The feasibility study has expanded our insight in the value creation processes for wind farms. This has led to a better understanding of the data product value chain and its variations in technical content, service type and market entry barriers. During the feasibility study our strategy has evolved and a clearer vision of how to access the market is formed.
The feasibility study has also incorporated a technical risk study. This concluded that only one item needed contingency planning in the Phase 2 project. A Phase 2 project sketch and a partner search for this was performed in the feasibility study. A 24 months pilot project plan is sketched with commitment from the relevant partners.
The feasibility study came with clear advice to continue the project and gave relevant inputs on IPR, HSE regulations and technical risk reductions actions that should be implemented in the Phase 2 project.
It is expected that the project contributes to increase the amount of renewable energy produced in the EU by improving the efficiency of wind farms in Europe. Improving the profitability of wind-farms will contribute to solve an important environmental and social challenge. It is an aim for the EU to make wind energy cost efficient, which will accelerate the replacement of fossil fuels with green energy.
