The overall aim of the UMi-TWINN project is to reinforce the scientific excellence and innovation capacity in logistic systems of the University of Miskolc (UMi) and its high-quality Twinning partners for the benefit of different industries and logistics market.
To achieve this aim, the 3 year project will build upon the existing strong research and innovation base of UMi and its twinning partners Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft e.V. IFF (Fraunhofer), Technische Universitaet Graz (TUGraz) and Intelligentsia Consultants (Intelligentsia).
The UMi-TWINN project aims to boost UMi and twinning partners\' scientific excellence and innovation capacity in logistics technologies, as well as implementing a research and innovation strategy focused on three sub-topics:
1. Design of logistic systems and networks;
2. Intelligent transport systems;
3. Dynamical analysis of materials handling machines.
The research and innovation strategy takes into account the recent SWOT analysis of UMi as well as the national Hungarian research priorities and regional Smart Specialisation Strategy .
The specific objectives of the UMi-TWINN project are presented below:
Objective 1: Strengthen UMi’s research excellence in Logistics
Objective 2: Enhance the research and innovation capacity of UMi and Twinning partners
Objective 3: Raise the research profile of UMi and the Twinning Partners Objective 4: Contribute to the research and innovation priorities of Hungary
Objective 5: Support research and innovation on a European level
In order to achieve these objectives, the consortium partners defined a comprehensive set of measures and activities implemented via the project’s work packages:
* Short term staff exchanges
* Training workshops, summer schools and conference
* Dissemination and outreach activities
At the beginning of the project, we described a concept for the realization of the activities in which we divided the project into three different time-periods:
• First year (2016) for gathering information (visits at the partner institutes, meeting with the partner staff, examination of the education structure and materials, studying research methods and procedures, looking into the research projects of the partners, etc.)
• Second year (2017) for engrossment (harmonizing of the education materials, application of the research methods, common research activities with the partner staff, etc.)
• Third year (2018) for results (development of new education modules for the courses, common EU project applications, jointed publications, etc.)
During first period we followed the predefined concept, so we finished the activities related to the gathering information. At this moment we are in the second year and working on the adaptation of the gained information into the research and education activities of the UMi. Of course many topics remained for training by the partners, but the main focus will be on the joint activities (publications, developing education materials, researches, etc.) and the dissemination of the results during the second project period.
Summarising the activities of the first period of the project, related to WP1, we can state that the proportional fulfilment of the project objectives are generally obtained, only some lag in the joint publications exists. However the joint activities are depend on the knowledge exchanges and trainings of the project which are in progress at this moment, so the most of the joint activities will be realized in the second period of the project.
Detailed information about the activities:
- 16 staff exchanges were realized between the partners,
- 4 project meetings were organized in administrative matters,
- 25 papers were published in 11 national and international journals,
- 2 joint publications were prepared and submitted between the partner institutes,
- 1 study was prepared,
- 35 presentations and papers were published at 9 national and international conferences,
- 5 project applications were submitted,
- 2 training workshops were organized,
- 2 summer schools were organized, etc.
The project’s overall aim and its four specific impacts are in accordance with the expected impacts set in the work programme. Indeed, as implied by the project’s aim, the proposal will strengthen the scientific excellence and innovation capacity of UMi in logistics technology, and boost the capabilities of UMi’s researchers to produce breakthrough innovations and technologies with a positive impact on the Hungarian society and economy.
The specific impacts targeted by the project are the following:
Impact 1. Improvement in the scientific excellence and innovation capacity of UMi in logistics;
Impact 2. Increase in international collaboration on a European level of UMi in logistics;
Impact 3. Increase in the research profile of UMi in logistics;
Impact 4. Contribution to the research and innovation priorities of Hungary.
The improvement of scientific and innovation capacity of UMi in logistics technology involves, on the one hand, an increase in the quality and quantity of the related academic work (research and education) produced by UMi’s researchers and, on the other hand, an increase in the quantity and impact of the application of UMi’s research produced in the field of logistics technology to the society and economy of Hungary.
The approach to improve UMi’s science and innovation capacity in the field of logistics technology research will lead to the following results:
• Increase in peer-reviewed publications and citations of UMi in the field of logistics technology;
• Increase in the number of presentations given by UMi researcher at scientific conferences in the field of logistics technology;
• Increase in the participation of UMi in the Horizon 2020 programme concerning logistics;
• Increase in international collaboration on a European level in logistics involving UMi;
• Increase in the number of students involved in study programmes provided by UMi in the field of logistics technology;
• Increase in the number of businesses collaborating with UMi on logistics-related projects.
