Summary

The smartlock is part of the global Internet of Things market, a fast growing and technology enabling industry. Lepain has developed an innovative access control and unlocking system targeted at lock manufacturers to make existing locks “smart”. Manufacturers benefit from reduced costs and minimal infrastructure changes and production of a highly disruptive product. For property owners and managers, Digital Keys streamlines property management efficiencies and removes the risk of security breaches. The objectives of the Phase 2 project are to implement Near Field Communication technology and Bluetooth Low Energy technology features into the LEAPIN Software Development Kit; integrate the smartlocks with property management systems and undertake a market replicability test involving pilot trials of the smart lock in hotels across Europe. The overall objective of the project is to start full commercialisation of Digital Keys as a reliable innovation validated by the relevant end-users, hotels and their guests.

Work performed

Leapin undertook a full analysis of both the technical and business potential of the Digital Keys technology establishing early on the technical activities needed to advance the SmartLock to commercialisation. Leapin established a sound scale-up plan taking into account all activities necessary for the successful growth through Europe. Within this, Leapin assessed different commercialisation strategies and calculated five financial projections. The value chain was elaborated and Leapin identified early on strategic partnerships with clients that will be fundamental to both the successful delivery of the Phase 2 project and through commercialisation.

Final results

The expected outcome of the project is to start full commercialisation of Leapin’s Digital Keys SmartLock development kit at the end of Phase 2 as a reliable innovation validated by the relevant end users. Digital Keys aligns with the European Commission’s action plan for Digital Tourism to boost competitiveness of small businesses in the European tourism sector through integration of global digital value chains and increasing job creation. The solution will significantly disrupt the hospitality industry generating economic growth for European SMEs both in Europe and globally.
