Summary

SHIPLYS is targeted towards shipyards who need to improve their capability to reduce the cycle time and costs of design and production, to be able to reliably produce better ship concepts through virtual prototyping and to meet the increasing requirements for LCCA (Life Cycle Cost Analysis), environmental assessments, risk assessments and end-of-life considerations as differentiators.

Specific SHIPLYS project objectives and work done in the Reporting Period towards meeting these objectives are listed below:
1)Transfer relevant knowhow from industry information modelling schemes
2)Develop standardization aspects for capturing and using data during early design processes
3)Develop functionality for rapid early design prototyping, rapid production simulation, analysing performance (based on life cycle costing (LCC), environmental sustainability, multi-criteria decision analysis (MCDA) and risk assessment), and integrating various software applications using the SHIPLYS software platform developed in the project.
4)SHIPLYS is building on ISO10303 standards for interoperable data reuse and is introducing new activities to the standard. The SHIPLYS good practice guide was developed.
5)Developed approaches to determine quality and criticality of data in terms of its impact on early design
6)Developed SHIPLYS Database and libraries software. Here the aim was to develop functionality enabling several software tools to communicate with each other through SHIPLYS Database and libraries, and allowing the end user the option to monitor the current design state.
7)Developed software for operational profile and ship configuration
8)Developed production analysis and planning tools and ship design workflow controller software
9)Provided overview of SHIPLYS rapid virtual design and production process prototyping functionality

Work performed

The SHIPLYS project is driven by requirements of small and medium enterprise (SME) shipyards that need to make reliable cost estimates in the limited time they have to respond to tenders for new building or retrofitting jobs. Thus, the project started with the key initial task of confirming and developing end user scenarios corresponding to early ship design stages. These are the scenarios that will inform the development of software functionality within the project in order to provide solutions to certain specific issues. These end user scenarios were developed by the active participation of the shipyards present in the consortium – FERG, VARNA and ATD. The scenario presented by FERG supports the development of SHIPLYS tools for analysing the sustainability of ship power systems. The scenario presented by VARNA informs the development of risk based ship design analytical tools and the one by ATD supports the development of retrofitting management tools.

During the first reporting period,the requirements for the development of SHIPLYS tools and the software integration functionality has been carried out by identifying knowhow from other industry sectors apart from previous or ongoing work in the shipping sector. The efficacy of approaches and tools are dependent on the type of data used. Methods for assessing the quality of data and determining critical data are being developed, and this process will continue in the second Reporting Period. Preliminary work on the design prototyping and production simulation generators has been completed.

In the second half of the project, our focus was on developing software tools - ‘SHIPLYS tools ’ - to address the issues represented by the scenarios from shipyards present in the SHIPLYS Consortium. There are three ‘SHIPLYS Scenarios’: one requiring the optimisation of hybrid propulsion system used in a short route ferry ship (Scenario 1), another requiring support during early design stages of new build ship through inputs from risk-based life cycle assessments (Scenario 2), and the third requiring support during early planning and costing of ship retrofitting accounting for life cycle costs and risk assessments. These three Scenarios were mooted by Ferguson Marine Engineering Ltd (UK), Varna Marine Engineering Ltd (Bulgaria) and Astilleros de Santander SA (Spain) respectively.

Dissemination, exploitation and software training activities have been carried out. Two major workshops were carried out - one in Varna (June 2019) and the other one in Vigo (July 2019), in addition to the one in Brussels during the midterm review meeting that included stakeholders from LINCOLN and HOLISHIP H2020 projects. During the final reporting period, further connections were made with HOLISHIP, LINCOLN and RAMSSES projects to exchange knowhow. Engagement with the SHIPLYS Stakeholders’ Advisory Committee (SAC) has been beneficial to the project. Periodic updates were provided to them and a SAC meeting was held in Varna (July 2019).

Final results

The expected impact mentioned in the Description of Action (DoA) is valid and key points are reiterated here:

• Market expectations for enhanced services
Market demands and shipyards’ own interests often require early design to consider through life performance of the proposed vessel. SHIPLYS tools will provide shipyard end-users the ability to offer such value added service during the tendering process for new building or retrofitting jobs.
• Productivity, flexibility and responsiveness in manufacture
SHIPLYS tools will enable better retrofitting management, providing shipyards the ability to respond to changes and improve their productivity.
• Regulatory demands for cleaner, greener vessels
The sustainability analysis functionality developed in SHIPLYS will enable shipyards and other stakeholders to meet the increasingly stringent demands of regulatory bodies.
• Reduction in design and manufacturing costs
SHIPLYS will enable a more streamlined design and manufacturing process resulting in reduced costs.
• Improved sales success rate through better bids
SHIPLYS will enable shipyards to make more realistic assessments of the scope, time and cost of work involved, in the limited time they have during the bidding process in response to tenders.
• Knowledge acquisition in the field of ship structural performance
SHIPLYS databases and approach will contribute to the understanding of ship structural performance.
• Environmental and safety benefits
SHIPLYS will support the environmental and safety campaigns at shipyards and at sea.
• Improving innovation capacity and the integration of new knowledge
The SHIPLYS developmental process included interdisciplinary experts and a variety of stakeholders including academic partners involved in disseminating and gaining new knowledge through publications and training the next generation of research students. Among SHIPLYS partners, there are others who are closer to the market and have an interest in taking innovative ideas further to application.
• SHIPLYS tools will strengthen the competitiveness of companies by supporting them in meeting the needs of the markets as mentioned earlier.

• Contribution to standards and regulations
SHIPLYS has built on ISO10303 standards for interoperable data reuse and is proposing the introduction of new activities to the standard. SHIPLYS has also made efforts to influence regulatory activities relating to environment.
