The study has assessed the technical, commercial and financial feasibility of a technology platform for the high efficient conversion of waste biomass feedstock into energy via hydro-catalytic plasma gasification.
PLASMAPOWER has been developed by the consortium set by Elivere Innovación and BluePlasma Power (BPP). It is an innovative (based on hydro-catalytic plasma arc technology), highly efficient (2kWh per kg biomass vs. 1.1kWh of conventional gasifiers), and cost-effective (electricity produced 2x times cheaper than other off grid technologies) biomass gasification system that produces sustainable power from the valorisation of low value biomass feedstock (i.e. forest debris and nut shells).
According to our findings, it will be profitable for our end-users (internal rate of return (IRR) of 28% and payback time from 2 to 4 years depending on the biomass feedstock used; zero or negative cost for waste biomass readily available, and 0,03 €/kWh for woodchips including 80km transport) in off-grid applications that require a reliable source of electric energy (50-400kWe).
Per the DoW outlined in Phase 1 proposal, the following tasks were to be undertaken in this Feasibility Study: 1 - Technical Feasibility Assessment; 2 - Commercial Feasibility Assessment and 3 – Financial Feasibility Assessment, and result has given the confidence in the techno economic viability of the innovation, and on the commercial market opportunity that it could mean for our companies boosting. Therefore, we have decided to move forward to the Phase 2 as a necessary step to reach the expected business impact, for which consortium requires from external funds, that ideally would come from a Phase 2 grant, or in other case, from alternative sources such as Business Angels or Venture Capital.
Two market drivers: 1) Rural energy in Europe & climate change mitigation and 2) Waste-to-Energy & resource efficiency have created an attractive business opportunity for ELÃVERE and BLUEPLASMA POWER, who have developed PLASMAPOWER as an off-grid renewable source of electricity to provide future end-users uninterrupted power supply for self-generation and/or self-consumption avoiding the high costs of having utility power lines extended to a remote location
Target clients of PLASMAPOWER are waste biomass producing activities, particularly agricultural and livestock holdings, sawmills, waste-intensive industries such as the agri-food, and waste treatment centers that have ready access to biomass residue.
