Summary

Issue being addressed

Since the pilot phase in 2014, the partners have managed 158 cases and only 7 did not accept the SME Instrument coaching, 5 in 2015, 2 in 2016 and none in 2017 or 2018. The overall quantitative results are especially important and a remarkable aspect of project management. Both partners and their KAMs work for the project since 2014 and have great experience in facilitating the access of companies to coaching, as well as to new services of the regional ecosystem.
Compared to 2015 and 2016, when 44 new cases were supported each year, 26 new cases were supported in 2017 and 32 in 2018. Apart from numerous training activities accessible to beneficiaries (see section 3) the madri+d Foundation published a brief guide on the writing of SME instruments in September 2017 to increase the participation and the quality of the SME Instrument proposals. A workshop was also organized, and participants from more than 60 entities attended the workshop. The SME Instrument coaching service was also presented in several events, i.e. at a specific event for experts organized by the EEN at Madrid Network.
Regarding the coach selection and matching process, search for new coaches is done combining different types of sources: the Casetracker database, where the use of keywords is prioritized in searches and it is particularly valued to know the cases made by the coaches and the SMEs final assessment; the EIC SME Instrument-data hub which allows a broader search of coaches already assigned in the sectors and geographical areas of interest of the beneficiaries; or contacting other EEN partners.
Part of the services on which clients are informed are those offered by the partners such as madri+d mentoring, search for financing or participation in acceleration programs. madri+d KAM Eduardo Diaz was invited to share madri+d mentoring and certification experience with the EASME team in 2017. madri+d has been running a successful mentoring program since 2006 with more than 200 active mentors and 400 startups supported. Many other contacts with potential Partners, possible Clients, Associations or Programme managers have been facilitated.

Why is it important for society

Fast-growing companies are the future leaders in the market and will keep Europe at the head of innovation.

What are the overall objectives

NNMADRIMASD 3 KAM services aim to identify needs in companies benefitting from H2020 SME instrument grants and offer them suitable coaches that could address their main bottlenecks to growth, finding linkages between the company and other innovation support services as well as helping the involvement of beneficiaries into the Business Acceleration Services.

Work performed

During INNMADRIMASD3, 58 new beneficiaries from the Madrid Region were contacted and visited and the KAMs helped the development of 122 new coaching cases. All the SMEs accepted the coaching and their receptivity to the service and to the coaches assigned was in general very positive. 122 clients were supported during the period with 76 cases completed. All these companies except 4 in the coach selection phase had a coach assigned at the end of 2018. Also 29 companies (19 Phase 1 and 10 Phase 2) had still coaching activities running at the end of 2018.
Workshops addressed to participants in the SME Instrument, public presentations programme addressed to experts, an important number of training activities accessible to beneficiaries and a brief guide on the writing of SME instruments allowed to increase the participation and the quality of the SME Instrument proposals.
Coordination between the two partners has been very effective. Both partners and their KAMs work for the project since 2014 and have great experience in facilitating the access of companies to coaching, as well as to new services of the regional ecosystem. The coach selection and matching process, search for new coaches is done combining different types of sources and the quality of the selection process has improved significantly year after year. All the SMEs accepted the coaching and their receptivity to the service and to the coaches assigned is in general very positive.

In the case of Natac there is a delay in the starting of the coaching due to the decision of the company to go through the SME Assessment; and 17 Phase 1 cases.
•3 cases that had started the coaching in 2017: 2 Phase 2 cases (Marsi Bionics, Qualityfry) and 1 Phase 1 case
•2 Phase 2 cases (Algaenergy, Life Length) that had started the coaching in 2016 and suffered internal difficulties or work spikes that made it preferable to stop the assignment; but the coaching is successfully underway in both cases.

Final results

The impact of the project will be measurable in a 5-year scale as companies, especially phase II of SME instrument could be market leaders. Also, the survival rate of those companies in 5 years could measure the impact.

For the work done, it is an important impact that new beneficiaries of SME instrument know what coaching is, what can offer them and are eager to have a coach as pathfinder.
