Summary

Population and economic growth will result in a doubling of demand for food globally by 20150. So, one of the main challenges in meeting this demand will be ensuring that food production and consumption is socially, economically and environmentally sustainable. Seafood is one of the most important food commodities consumed in Europe as it is an important source of high-quality protein, and is naturally rich in valuable nutrients for a healthy diet. It is therefore vital to develop new environmentally-friendly and transparent seafood production and processing methods that will support European seafood security and quality in-line with market demands.
SEAFOODTOMORROW is developing commercially viable and eco-innovative sustainable solutions to improve the socioeconomic and environmental sustainability of seafood production and processing sectors, while preserving seafood quality and safety and promoting seafood consumption in a healthy diet.

Work performed

The work developed by the 35 partners and 12 Third parties from 19 countries for the main SEAFOODTOMORROW solutions include the optimization of: a) market-driven, consumer-focused and tailor-made eco-innovative seafood products of improved quality, traceability, authenticity and safety (e.g. biofortified with essential nutrients from sustainable agro-food byproducts for consumers, products targeting specific population groups like elderly, pregnant women and youth, products with reduced salt/sodium); b) innovative, economically-viable seafood production and processing technologies that mitigate hazards and environmental damages (e.g. fast screening sensors, technologies able save energy and water consumption, multitrophic aquaculture); c) strategies to prevent or remove contaminants such as Norovirus, Listeria and marine toxins from seafood (e.g. shellfish processing, listeriaphages, depuration, buffer zones); d) tools and methodologies to facilitate traceability, authentication, labelling and benchmarking of EU seafood products (e.g. digital traceability, fast authenticity screening sensors); e) benchmark for seafood quality and traceability certification schemes for industry to strengthen consumer confidence and trust in European seafood (e.g. quality certification); f) reduction of public health risks and promotion of seafood consumption through transparent and responsible communication, dissemination, knowledge transfer and exploitation of project outcomes to stakeholders (e.g. online information tool balancing benefits and risks associated with seafood intake); and g) improved understanding of market acceptance of eco-innovative seafood solutions in different European regions and amongst different demographics (e.g. stakeholder and consumer questionnaires).

Final results

SEAFOODTOMORROW is contributing to six major impacts: a) improving current safety standards and giving baseline information on identified and emerging seafood safety issues not yet addressed by current standards and legislation; b) ensuring that eco-innovative solutions for the sustainable production and processing of marine and aquaculture-derived food products and nutrients are used more widely; c) Improving the competitiveness of the EU seafood sector, and increase opportunities for growth, diversification and job creation; d) allowing consumers to make better-informed seafood choices, by understanding consumers’ preferences and anticipating future needs; e) increasing the availability of healthier, tailor-made, safe, high-quality, low-cost, stable and sustainable seafood for European consumers; and f) improving professional skills and competences of those working and trained to work in the blue economy.
