Summary

Electronic disposable in-vitro diagnostic devices are currently powered with button batteries. After a single use the whole device is thrown away, including an almost fully charged battery. This represents a major hazard to the environment and it supposes an important drawback for the market, reducing disposable devices huge social and healthcare benefits.
Fuelium has patented a cost-effective, sustainable and ecofriendly paper-based battery technology to power electronic single use devices, as an alternative to costly and polluting button batteries. Compared with the over-dimensioned amount of energy in these batteries (~1% of the energy is employed), our batteries only generate the required amount of energy for in-vitro diagnostic devices with no toxic waste generation.
CLEANFUEL PHASE 1 OBJECTIVES
To perform a complete market analysis and contact potential clients.
To define the technological, commercial and industrial ROADMAP for the project.
To valuate regulatory requirements and calculate the total investment requirements to reach a go-to-market.

Work performed

COMMERCIAL FEASIBILITY STUDY: The detailed market analysis (value and forecast, segments, drivers, trends, etc.), performed during CLEANFUEL phase 1, has allowed us validating our market hypothesis and the market opportunity of our technology. Moreover, we have contacted potential clients and other stakeholders to know their needs and opinion about our technology to define the best way to reach the market.
TECHNICAL FEASIBILITY STUDY OBJECTIVES: In collaboration with potential clients, we have defined the main requirements for adaptation & integration of our paper-batteries in marketable electronic disposable in-vitro diagnostic devices and the key steps for their serial industrial manufacturing. We will develop a manufacturing process according to the requirements of GMP, quality assurance and quality control systems (QA/QC) arising from ISO 13485:2016.
OPERATIONAL/FINANCIAL FEASBILITY STUDY OBJECTIVES: All the work performed during the FA allowed us planning and designing a specific roadmap to finish the technology and commercial readiness to reach the market in a minimum risk scenario, analyzing the funding requirements to bring the CLEANFUEL paper batteries to the market.

Final results

Our technology is totally aligned with Point of Care (POC) industry needs and it will be the only alternative in the market to conventional button batteries, lowering both their poor energetic use and environmental impact. The uniqueness of our solution will not only benefit POC industry, but it will also reduce their environmental impact while bringing important social and healthcare system benefits (cost reduction, faster and better diagnostics).
