The project intends to test in icing wind tunnel three demonstrators equipped with innovative ice protection systems.
An electromagnetic induction system and a two-phase system will be designed and built for integrating them into the structure of the three demonstrators. The prototypes will be designed, manufactured, tested and analyzed along the twenty four months of this project. Two of them will be equipped with an ice protection system made of an electromagnetic system embedded in the composite structure. One test article will be equipped with a two-phase ice protection system integrated on a metallic skin.
The achievement of the project will conduct to the development of novel manufacturing processes such as the manufacturing of composite leading edge with small curvature radius (for the FLE demonstrator) or also the implementation of an additive layers manufacturing process for the manufacturing of the metallic intake. These new manufacturing processes are targeting a better quality of the products and a simplification of the industrialization chain leading to an increased competitiveness.
The objectives are described hereafter:
Objectives linked to the 1st test article:
- Design of the electromagnetic system integration into the composite leading edge of a wing test article
- Design of the whole wing test article
- Manufacturing of the wing test article and integration of the electro magnetic system into it
- Testing in Icing Wind tunnel, at RTA, the system of the wing test article.
Objectives linked to the 2nd test article:
- Design of the electromagnetic system integration into the composite leading edge of a flap test article
- Design of the whole flap test article
- Manufacturing of the flap test article and integration of the electro magnetic system into it
- Testing in Icing Wind tunnel, at RTA then at Cranfield University, the system of the flap test article.
Objectives linked to the 3rd test article:
- Design of the biphasic system integration into an engine air intake test article
- Design of the whole engine air intake test article
- Manufacturing of the engine air intake test article and integration of the biphasic system into it
- Testing in Icing Wind tunnel, at RTA, the system of the engine air intake test article
Since the begining of the project, one year ago.
The main achievements are as follows :
For the 1st test article:
- The design of the test article and of the system integration is completed
- The manufacturing of the primary parts is on progress
- A composite sample was manufactured
For the 2nd test article:
- The design of the test article and of the system integration is completed
- The manufacturing of the primary parts is on progress
For the 3rd test article:
- A trade off between all the integration processes was done
- An Advanced concept of the design has been done.
2 milestones were performed
The remaining activities are as follows:
for the 1st test article:
- Finalizing the test article manufacturing
- Testing the test article in icing Wind tunnel
for the 2nd test article:
- Finalizing the test article manufacturing
- Testing the test article in 2 icing Wind tunnels
for the 3rd test article:
- Choosing a final concept, design and manufacture it
- Testing the test article in icing wind tunnel
The expected impact of the project is to demonstrate the applicability of new technologies for the ice protection systems and their integration.
The replacement of the today existing active ice protection systems mounted on the surfaces of engine intakes by a passive two-phase system will provide significant savings on electrical energy consumption, and mass.
For the 5 companies involved in this project, the opportunity is to develop their activities and so to have a beneficial impact on the employment. A successful project could lead to the extent of the activity of every member:
EHP would need to develop serial parts for 2 phase systems.
Ikerlan would have to define the electromagnetic systems.
Sonaca would have to integrate the systems into aero structures
RTA and Cranfield university would have to test the developed systems in their IWT.
