Summary

Access and/or maintenance to clean air to ventilate indoor spaces is challenging as the market still lacks cost-effective and eco-friendly Heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) solutions. Poor indoor air quality has profound socio-economic impacts such as increased respiratory diseases and decreased of work productivity. Viera Lopes has developed NPS® to fulfil the market need for an improved solution for indoor Air Quality (IAQ). The goals of the feasibility study were to mature the value proposition of NPS® and identify key requirements to be addressed in Phase 2, with focus on the cost benefit analysis of NPS® and design of a solid route-to-market leveraged by a strong stakeholder network. Furthermore, the study had the aim of securing market leading large-scale trial partners and global sales partners for Phase 2.

Work performed

The purpose of the feasibility study was to identify challenges and address requirements for the large market uptake of NPS®. The study included three main dimensions:
1. Technical Feasibility Assessment – main outputs: product design matured, and comprehensive cost-benefit analysis completed;
2. Business Planning – main outputs: a) establishment of a market entry roadmap for product deployment and scalability; b) further definition and characterization of the market positioning of NPS® and competitive landscape and c) outline of the regulatory requirements and police compliance.
3. Innovation Project Planning – main outputs: a) design of the work plan to be implemented during the Phase to in order to overcome the identified market barriers and b) end-user agreements for Phase 2 demonstrations were secured and a wide network with stakeholders and value chain players successfully established.

Final results

The study has demonstrated strong indications that NPS® will meet the recurrent market needs for a solution that is, at the same time, compact, capable of high throughput and highly efficient – fulfilling the strict requirements of sensible environments, e.g. hospital areas, and cleanrooms. NPS® will be capable of mitigating risks and consequent costs caused by infections and contaminations of such indoor environments. The Phase 2 activities will be key implement crucial market maturation activities thereby facilitating wide international growth. NPS® will contribute to minimize the socio-economic costs of poor IAQ by providing efficient indoor air disinfection from deleterious substances and meet the sector’s ambition to reduce overall costs and improved energy performance – especially in industrial and commercial buildings, where the bill from HVAC operations represents a large slice of organisations’ overheads.
