Summary

Floods are the most common natural disaster in the world, affecting 2.3bn people and creating losses of €1,723bn (1995-2015). Catastrophic floods are predicted to increase in frequency and severity in the next few decades due to global warming. The EU’s Floods Directive requests exposed citizens, public organisations and private companies to take flood-risk reducing measures at building scale. However, these stakeholders must choose between permanent solutions with high flood resistance and cost, or affordable but less reliable temporary solutions whose activation needs may not be available in emergency situations and that need storage space when not in use.
The objective of the FLOODFRAME project is to bring into the market a reliable flood protection solution for the full perimeter of different-size buildings that is inconspicuous when not in use and does not need human intervention or electricity to be activated, at an affordable price.

Work performed

A study of the European market of Flood Protection Systems was made, yielding the most favourable countries to target first. The Segmented Addressable Market was quantified and used to validate a hybrid B2B/B2C business model that optimizes business growth and chances of success in market entry. Based on this, a commercial strategy for FLOODFRAME’s market entry was developed. A FTO analysis was made, revealing that FloodFrame A/S has freedom to operate worldwide, and an IP protection strategy for the project was made. The objectives of the technical work of Phase 2 were defined and the 3 technical work packages of the Phase 2 Work Plan were developed, with an evaluation of the timing, budget and personnel needed to execute them. Financial projections were made for the next 6 years and the complete Phase 2 budget was calculated. A risk management strategy for all aspects of the project was made.

Final results

The introduction of FLOODFRAME in the market is an opportunity for FloodFrame A/S to earn a total of 19.5M€ in profits during the first 4 years in the market (6.8 ROI), allowing the company to increase its headcount from 5 to 70 and to solidify and expand its business internationally. During this time, the predicted 9,010 single-family FLOODFRAME units sold will protect more than 27,000 people against catastrophic floods in Europe and the USA, and 9 units will be installed around collective-use buildings. The FLOODFRAME project is an opportunity to reduce the impact of floods in public health, state funds and local economies.
