Summary

Worldwide, sparkling wine is expected to grow by 54 milion litters during the period 2019 – 2023 with a CAGR of 2% The whole sparkling wine sector production has been grown during these last 5 years by an average of 15% in the most important wine regions which are Italy, France, Spain and Germany. The champagne industry is a luxury industry, and as such aesthetic appearance is of high value. Stored wine bottles are prone to defacements like iridescence, lime scales, or rust that occur on the surface of bottles during the handling and the characteristically long storage. These defacements affect some bottles of every matured champagne batch, which may provoke the loss of 10-20% of the bottle productions.

PRIMA has developed an automated cleaning system that can clean and polish such vast volumes of filled champagne bottles, eliminating the need for manual polishing (and repetitive activity which is not 100% efficient and uses large water quantities) while observing strictly the Food Standards Agency (FSA) regulations, and involving no chemicals. This would ultimately improve the quality of the champagne in terms of both aesthetics and wine properties.

Work performed

Technical Plan: in-lab tests have been executed and described the need to use the Max. 1,500 bottles per hour polishing approach. Additional improvements, such as the use of artificial vision for automatic bottle analysis and chain production for larger producers has been analysed and accepted. A work Plan has been defined to face EIC with guarantee. Technical risks have been identified.
Market analysis and Commercial feasibility includes the analysis of the different countries that have significance to champenoise based sparkling wine production. Producers have been identified and has given the potential sells for the PPB system. Commercial Risks have been identified.
Business and project execution plan: the business plan include a sales forecast, EBITDA estimations, and market risk identification. With an initial estimation of 1.9M€ for EIC Pilot, the exploitation BP indicates an ROI of 5 in 5 years.

Final results

The project opens a business for PRIMA of 11M€ profit, and 14 new employments during first 5 years. The worldwide production if today of 310 milion litters equal to more or less 400 million of bottles. The use of PPB offers the possibility to increase the productivity of these companies by around 10-15%, this is, 40-60 million of bottles that could be recovered generating savings for over 50-60 mln € only reducing the manual cleaning costs of the bottles and additional 30-40 mln costs for new bottles. The benefits generated by the possibility to commercialize instead to discard the wine will be probably not less than further 4-500 mln € but could not be better estimated because these value depends directly to the standard production costs that may vary sensibly from Producer to Producer and that are sensible data that nobody is publishing.
