Summary

Anteryon is a medium- to high-volume manufacturer of optical solutions in industrial markets. The company has a track record of over 30 years in the R&D, manufacturing and marketing of refractive optical components and modules, such as lenses, lens arrays, beam splitters, fiber collimators, filters, diode lasers and laser scanners. Since 2010, Anteryon has been providing customized solutions for compact optical sensors and spectrometers.

The overall goal of the project is to develop and to market miniature modular spectrometer modules (Colibri) for use in waste or scrap management, and in food safety control. The Colibri module is the carrier for a novel architecture and manufacturing platform enabling compact, cost-effective, user friendly, robust and reconfigurable spectrometers. It is based on a novel and proprietary modular-assembly approach combining the key-competences of Anteryon and the newest advancements in CMOS detector technologies.
In this way, the increased use of LIBS will also contribute to the social themes and to the efficiency in executing European programs in the field of waste management, environmental protection, ecological footprint reduction, food safety control and health care.

The proposal relates to the call NMP 25 – 2014 “Accelerating the uptake of nanotechnologies, advanced materials or advanced manufacturing and processing technologies by SMEs”.

Work performed

The results of the feasibility assessment in Phase-1 of Colibri are as follows:
• Technical Viability (Chapter 2): design studies and calculations confirm a breakthrough in size, modularity and cost of the Colibri sensor module compared to today’s technology.
• Economic Viability (Chapter 3): competitor analysis, value assessment and market analyses confirm that we can follow a “blue ocean” marketing and sales approach and that this strategy will open new large markets in materials analysis.
• Operational Viability (Chapter 4): Anteryon has the right spirit, infra-structure and proven track-record to successfully commercialise the Colibri module.
• Conclusion for this Action (Chapter 5): it is viable to proceed with Phase-2 to further develop the Colibri module from TRL level 6 to TRL level 9.

The next step is that Anteryon will submit the detailed project plan and Business Plan for Phase-2.

Final results

The target Market Segment is the segment of applications where LIBS as materials analysis technology is already qualified in the lab, but where field introduction had been blocked so far by complexity and cost. Within this segment, five most promising Product Market Combinations (PMCs) have been defined and evaluated for expected success rate: Inorganic Material Analysis, Food & Agriculture, Medical & Biomedical analysis, Soil analysis and Gas analysis.
Competitive solutions and providers have been analysed and ranked.
The expected revenues and return of investment have been validated and are promising.
