Amateur filmmakers need seamless process and lower cost of film production, more creative freedom (functionality, effects, and central management), affordable tools of filmmaking. Digital Sputnik Lighting (DSL) plans to develop Advanced Lighting Management Solution (ALMS) for amateur film production market that offers professional-grade lighting functionality for 80% lower cost. ALMS central management software for tablets/smartphones is integrated into film production process and it reduces total cost of film production process by 30%. Plus, feature rich ALMS will provide drastically improved creative freedom for creative industry. ALMS can also be used for central precision management of smart lighting to achieve maximum energy savings with minimum effort.
DSL has extensive experience and know-how in film production, which helps design the correct usability and functionality of ALMS, so it will support the process of film production. ALMS will reduce need for crew, electricity, lighting equipment, transportation, and training and will increase efficiency of film production process.
Phase I objectives were:
1) To target 20 early adopter users and 4 early adopter manufacturers of lights for cooperation in R&D process;
2) To engage 10 early adopter users and 2 early adopter manufacturers of lights into the development of new communication protocol strategy, integration strategy with ALMS, strategy and specifications for Phase II;
3) To plan and budget test-sites with 12 early adopters;
4) To develop business and project plan drafts.
20 early adopter users and 4 early adopter manufacturers of lights from different countries were selected and contacted. After meeting them in person on live sets 10 early adopter users and 3 early adopter manufacturers of lights were selected for cooperation in Phase I and also in Phase II as test-sites. In cooperation with early adopters, new communication protocol strategy, integration strategy, and specifications for Phase II. 12 test-sites in cooperation with early adopters were planned and budgeted. Business and project plans were drafted. DSL plans to apply for Phase II project grant.
After redesigning of the strategy during the Phase I, target market has been expanded, covering both professional and amateur market. The planned final result of the Phase II is fully functional and tested ALMS solution. Expected impact of the use of ALMS is 30% lower cost of film production and significantly increased creative freedom.
