What is the problem/issue being addressed?
Internet of Everything (IoE) is recognized to be one of the dominant ways transforming the way we manage and live in our urban environments in the future. The extension of the Internet to the physical spaces and objects is a massive opportunity for new services and business for example in the areas of logistics, transport, environment, security and wellbeing.
IoE is directly linked to the smart city development, but it has proceeded slower than expected. The key showstoppers are the lack of common standards, fragmented marketplace, and lack of ways to systematically test and introduce new solutions in the cities.
The common challenge of the SELECT for Cities PCP is the design, research and development of “cities as linked and large-scale Internet of Everything labs”.

Why is it important for society?
The extension of the Internet to the physical spaces and objects is a massive opportunity for new services and business for example in the areas of logistics, transport, environment, security and wellbeing.
Besides the potential high number of new services capable of being created via such a City wide IoE lab, such a platform which integrates the cities current IoT and Smart infrastructure, will provide huge gains in terms of better public services, reduced public costs, and foster economical development through the development of an IoE focused industry.

What are the overall objectives?
The challenge lies in developing an open, standardized, data-driven, service- oriented and user-centric platform that enables large-scale co-creation, testing and validation of urban IoE applications and services. This approach fosters the longer-term goal of evidence-based innovation in cities.
The envisaged platform has several requirements, components & features that are currently not available in existing solutions. The platform must allow collaboration between departments and cities, and (automated) testing of IoE services. The design should be based on an open and modular approach, and support cloud-based, data-driven, service-oriented, user-centric, and co-created large-scale testing.
The joint effort of the partners procuring this pre-commercial track lies in guarding the integration capabilities of the platform with solutions that exist in the respective cities today. Particular attention will thus need to be paid to technologies and tools that allow smooth communication and integration between these existing solutions. The end goal of SELECT for Cities is taking the idea of the city as a large Internet of Everything Lab and putting it into practice.

Work performed

In the following, progress and achievements during the period of 1st February 2017 – 31st August 2018 are described for WPs 3,4,5,6 and 7. The Project management aspects (WP1) are described in Chapter 3.4.

Work Package 1 – Project Management and coordination
During the second period report, besides the normal day-to-day project management activities, a project second amendment was prepared in order to ensure a proper management of prefinancing funds so that the project as enough capital to fund Contractors, an extension ot the project’s second period duration by 2 months and reduction of the third and final period by the same amount, and a role change for the Copenhagen Solutions Lab (Beneficiary No. 6) by reducing its participation in the testing and evaluation of the Contractors\' prototypes and pilot implementation.
This amendment did not cause disruptions to the project activities or delays in the timeline.

Work Package 3 – Solutions Design (Phase 1) - aims at the execution of PCP phase 1 – Solution Design
During the second period report, phase 1 execution was completed. During PCP Phase 1, 10 Contractors were engaged. At the end of Phase 1, 6 contractors were considered successful and invited to Phase 2 call-off.

Work Package 4 – Prototyping (Phase 2) - aims at the development and lab testing of working prototypes
During the second period report, phase 2 was completed. This included a call-off, evaluation of bids, execution of the phase and end of phase evaluation. During PCP Phase 2, five Contractors were engaged, and all five were considered successful and invited to Phase 3 call-off.

Work Package 5 – Solutions testing (Phase 3) - aims at the testing of prototypes inside cities living labs, within real life settings and use-cases
During the second period report, phase 3 call-off was prepared and launched. Also the incoming Phase 3 approach, tools, timeline and local implementation plans, have been prepared in detail.

Work Package 6 – Learnings and Recommendations
The objective of the WP6 is to ensure a recording and sharing of knowledge on the challenges and best practices for implementing such type of PCP instrument. The consortium has been producing a number of reports with recommendations (See WP6 deliverables), as well as some of its members have been taking part in EC and non-EC events and work trips with the intent of sharing its learnings and recommendations.

Work Package 7 – Communication and Dissemination
The objective of the WP7 is to ensure fluent communication and dissemination within the Project community and external stakeholders. In WP7 a Communication and Dissemination Plan will be delivered for the Project, providing instructions for active promotional activities aimed at ensuring the widest possible dissemination of the Project’s activities and outcomes. All Partners contribute actively to the Communication and Dissemination of the Project.

Final results

The resulting Phase 2 prototypes have different degrees of novelty and technical innovations. All five prototypes are very interesting and potentially capable of real impact into the cities ecosystems of innovation and Smart City related platforms.
