The Programme for Post-Doctoral Talent Attraction to the International Excellence Campus (CEI) UAM+CSIC, InterTalentum, is a programme developed by the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (UAM), which intends on building particularly favourable environment to attract the best experienced researchers in the four Focus Research Areas of CEI UAM+CSIC: Biology and Biomedicine, Nanoscience, Nanotechnology and Advanced Materials, Theoretical Physics and Mathematics and Social Sciences, Legal Sciences and Humanities. The program aims at exploiting the full potential of the CEI UAM+CSIC to offer the fellows a truly interdisciplinary and intersectorial training that will strengthen their curricula and provide the region of Madrid with a pool of researchers capable of preserving the long standing tradition for scientific excellence and bridging the gap between academic and applied research.
InterTalentum is a long-term programme (lasting 5 years) in which two calls have been opened to experienced researchers (9 fellowships per call), with same transnational mobility required by the Marie Sklodowska-Curie programme. The fellows have the opportunity to develop her/his research project within the framework of a vast network of institutions participating under CEI UAM+CSIC. InterTalentum is devolped in a Global Campus, including some worldwide reference research laboratories at Universidad Autónoma de Madrid.
During the first reporting period of InterTalentum the basis on which it operates were stablished. The Management Board (MB) took the necessary first steps related to the constitution of the different committees (mainly the Project Steering Committee and the Distribution Committee). The Distribution Committee proposed thereafter the members of the Scientific Advisory Board. In this context, the work on all the necessary arrangements for launching the first call of proposals started soon and this was opened on 1st July 2016 until 30th September 2016. The subsequent evaluation and selection process finished with the meeting of the Scientific Advisory Board on 22nd and 23rd February 2017.
The main statistics of the first calls are the following:
•71 applicants working all around the world (66 eligible) •243 Referee reports from external experts in the field •18 Applicants interviewed in the second stage •9 Selected fellows •Success rate 13.6 %
In this context, the trans-national mobility Programme has already enabled the Campus to incorporate 9 fellows of high international level and at the same time the fellows are already developing their projects in an outstanding research environment. The areas of CEI UAM+CSIC Campus which are being addressed by the projects are Biology, Biomedicine, Advanced Materials, Nanoscience, Mathematics, Theoretical Physics and Legal Sciences.
InterTalentum is helping to combat the fragmented incorporation of experienced international researchers to the CEI UAM+CSIC area of influence (Madrid Region), enabling the institutions and centers of the Campus to contribute significantly to the development within their own setting of high quality human resources, by introducing and/or further developing the trans-national dimension of their offers.
The selection of fellows is an open and merit-based competition founded on international peer-review. InterTalentum avoids limitations regarding the origin or destination of researchers, offering adequate working conditions.
Hence, the programme guarantees the consolidation of key good practices in the institution.
On the other hand, it is remarkable to mention that InterTalentum fellows recruited in the first call are starting to obtain their first publishable results.
