Platforms4CPS directly addresses the growing challenge of developing time- and safety-critical embedded and Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) and their integration into Systems of Systems. The key aim of Platforms4CPS is to “create the vision, strategy, technology building blocks and supporting ecosystem of innovative, interconnected
researchers, developers and users for future CPS applicationsâ€. CPS are made up of physical systems - i.e. mechanical, hydraulic, electrical and other systems - as well as electronics and software. The integration of these different disciplines represents one of the main challenges of CPS. The key challenge for the future is to provide
tools, technologies and platforms to design, programme and implement highly distributed and connected digital technologies.
Europe is a world leader in the area of time-critical and safety-critical systems and to maintain this position there is a need to be able to design, develop and deploy highly distributed and connected digital technologies. In this proposal we consider the transport, health, energy and manufacturing domains. In all of these sectors there is a move towards increased autonomy while at the same time a need to meet demanding safety, security, power efficiency, performance, size and cost constraints. The development and introduction of platforms for CPS deployment is seen as key to the future but only through building a supporting ecosystem of developers and users can a platform flourish and become successful.
Platforms4CPS project has defined a number of key strategic actions to bring together leading CPS experts from academia and industry to collaborate on future CPS architectures and platforms, to:
• Structure constituencies
• Update and validate existing CPS roadmaps
• Address the foundations of CPS Engineering and the Science of System Integration
• Cooperate with other European programmes (ECSEL/ITEA/Artemis-IA/Big Data, 5G etc. PPPs)
• Create a Platforms Forum called PlatForum for information exchange, identify Best Practice and create a repository of CPS technology blocks for industry and academic developers
• Develop consensus on societal and legal issues related to the deployment of CPS
(Work accomplished in first period in accordance with expected results described below)
CPS/IoT/digitalisation will have a transformative impact on our lives and open up new business opportunities for:
-Efficient, environmentally friendly, autonomous and safe mobility in the automotive, aeronautics, rail, maritime and logistics sectors;
-Greater efficiency in management and operations for process automation, manufacturing, conventional/renewable power plants, energy conversion, smart grids and smart metering;
-Greater benefits to citizens via smart, safe and secure cities, energy efficient buildings and green infrastructure (traffic management, lighting, water and waste management);
-Smart devices & services for smart home functionality, home monitoring, health services and assisted living.
Society is just becoming aware of the dramatic impacts that new technologies will have on their lives. Introduction of increased autonomy, e.g. autonomous cars, is providing sociotechnical challenges with respect to dealing with unpredictable behaviour of humans interacting with autonomous systems, unforeseen emergent properties and the need to develop societal acceptance (trust). Key properties such as safety need to be strongly regulated to ensure acceptance by society, while European SMEs need to be able to utilize innovation to capture market shares in a sustainable way. Here there is a need to create a dialogue with, and educate, society.
Overall objectives for the CPS and Industrial IoT Landscape Work Package:
• Assess the global CPS situation, particularly for transportation, manufacturing and healthcare feeding WP2 and WP3 activities.
• Identify opportunities for adoption of horizontal CPS platforms
• Launch a public market segmentation of CPS technologies.
• Look at what is going on in Europe and also the US.
• Opportunities for European technologies to access the market
The primary objective for the Roadmapping and Recommendations Work Package is to strategically update and validate CPS roadmaps by:
• Getting a clear picture on CPS roadmapping activities by mapping the CPS/IoT roadmap landscape
• Identifying and discussing CPS concepts, research challenges, enabling technologies and barriers with relevant stakeholders from academia, industry and policy making
• Evaluating research priorities, approaches to addressing the major enablers and barriers for suc-cessful CPS deployment, and defining implementation strategies
• Creating a ‘living’ roadmap document (Community Roadmap)
The second key objective (within the next project year) will be to analyse the results obtained from the roadmapping activities and the inputs from the other WPs, and summarise them in a form of recommendations for the development of future RTD and Innovation Strategies in the field of CPS.
Platforms and Pre-normative Activities WP addresses:
• Pre-normative activities by creating a repository of CPS technology blocks and best practice that can be used by academic and industry developers to address key problems.
• Platforms for future European CPS industry.
• Identification of new opportunities for European platform building (and enhance collaboration on future platforms and architectures), taking into account both the innovation potential coming from academia, and the market opportunities in the worldwide competition.
Within the Collaboration/Consensus building and Creation of Foresight Community WP the overall objectives are:
• To create an ecosystem of developers and users around platforms and develop a community that reflects a large and diverse stakeholder base providing links between communities and policymakers.
• Engage with existing programmes such as ECSEL and ITEA, and with industry associations such as ARTEMIS-IA as well as the CPS Cluster of projects
• Address the foundations of CPS engineering by linking the expertise of the academic community with the needs and experience of the industrial community to make recommendations for pivotal research
• Build consensus on societal and lega
