The main objective of mySMARTLife project is the development of an Urban Transformation Strategy to support cities with the definition of transition models that act as a suitable path to reach a high level of excellence. The city needs and challenges must be addressed along the whole process, together with the smart people and smart economy concepts.
The Urban Transformation Strategy is being developed through the Advanced Urban Planning, which is an integrated approach that includes the LHCs interventions (evaluated by means of a rigorous impact assessment), an active citizen engagement in the decision-making process and a structured business approach from the city business model perspective (big companies, local SMEs and start-ups). This Urban Transformation Strategy is being deployed at two levels: for lighthouse cities and for fellow cities.
Also, a very effective collaboration framework is well established among the six cities. Lighthouse cities are implementing a number of actions (technical and non-technical) while fellow cities have already identified a set of actions that may be potentially replicable by them.
The technical actions are focused on transforming the energy and mobility model from a sustainable perspective. ICT solutions support improvements on urban planning management, urban infrastructures operation and provide physical tools to measure performance in the energy and mobility fields, while promoting the deployment of services for citizens. The non-technical actions aim at achieving a higher level of implementation of the smart people and smart economy concepts.
Nantes (France), Hamburg (Germany) and Helsinki (Finland) are the three lighthouse cities, and Bydgoszcz (Poland), Rijeka (Croatia) and Palencia (Spain) the fellow ones.
mySMARTLife addresses ambitious interventions at district level, aiming at increasing energy efficiency and maximising renewable energy contribution.
In relation to these objectives, mySMARTLife Lightouse cities have progressed in the accomplishment of their objectives, not only in terms of the definition of their Integrated Urban plans, but also with the demonstration of smart actions. Many of them have progressed or even have been finalised during this period.
mySMARTLife fellow cities have been very active during this second period. Bydgoszcz, Rijeka and Palencia have progressed quite a lot in parallel to the lighthouse cities. More precisely, together with the rest of mySMARTLife partners, these cities have developed their city 3D models and performed the simulation of the demand side for the next 10-20 years; which have been reported in D6.5 “Description of 3D models for each follower city†and D6.6 “Compilation of energy system scenarios for each follower city†at M28.
Also, during the first 30 months, mySMARTLife has established very strong links to the Smart Cities and Communities movement, been a very active member in the Collaboration group that have been established among the 14 lighthouse projects (93 cities involved) in the SCC initiative. mySMARTLife, as one of its most important collaboration achievement by the project is the joint organisation in Valladolid of the BY&FORCITIZENS conference, co-organised by mySMARTLife and REMOURBAN lighthouse projects among other projects coordinated by CARTIF.
Regarding its visibility, mySMARTLife cities and partners have participated in 23 events organised by the SCC-1 group. Among them, it can be highlighted the Manifesto signature and Replication event in Nottingham (24/03/2017), Barcelona SCEWC (14-16/11/2017), Sønderborg Replication workshop, SmartEnCity conference (04-06/10/2017) and the Lisbon SmartCities Summit, with a second signature of the Manifesto (11-13/04/2018). All these during Reporting Period 1. During the Reporting Period 2, it must be highlighted the SCEWC2018 in Barcelona (13-15/11/2018), the San Sebastian European Smart City Projects Summit (26-27/3/2019) where the Manifesto was signed. mySMARTLife has attended 4 SCIS or EIP SCC events.
Some smart actions have progressed, and although, at month 30, real data from the execution of the monitoring plans (aligned with the evaluation framework) are not available, some estimations on the energy savings with the current level of execution can be provided.
Indeed, project actions are grouped into interventions from the specific locations in each of the cities. In particular, the related actions in the mySMARTLife context are:
• Nantes (Action 1 - New construction programme, Action 2 – Multiowner buildings, Action 3 – Individual Houses, Action 4 – Building Pierre Landais, Action 5 – Building Oiseaux des Iles)
• Hamburg (Action 1 – new Construction Programme Schleusengraben district, Action 2 - Bergedorf Süd Retrofitting project)
• Helsinki (Action 1 – Merihaka and Vilhonvuori, Action 2 – Kalasatama district, Action 3 – Viikki Office)
The three LHCs are also providing energy storage solutions to maximize the share of renewables, thus avoiding production cuts due to lack of demand. Smart power management systems will achieve an efficient operation of the supply energy system.
The current degree of execution shows that Nantes Buildings Paris Bat A and Bat B, Le Strogoff, Val de Loire, Inspiration and Oiseaux des Iles have finished their retrofitting / new construction works.
In Hamburg, Am Schilfpark intervention in Hamburg is progressing quite well as for the case of the Retrofitting and New construccion programes (6 buildings finished, 287 flats, approx. 25,000 m2) in Helsinki, where finished.
According to the initial committments, a 55% of improvement (20,631k kWh/yr) with respect to the national regulation was the objective to be achieved. With the current degree of implementation, a 26% of this objective is estimated to be fully achieved (5,327k kWh/yr). It is worth mentioning that this value is influenced to a great extent by Action II – Zone 2 Retrofitting in Hamburg. If we eliminate this action from the analysis, a 78% of the global objective in terms of committed improvement to national regulation would be ready to be further justified with the executions by month 30 (6,022k kWh/yr in proposal stage, while 4,713k kWh/yr estimated to be achieved in m30).
Regarding RES contribution, it was expected a 54% of energy supplied with RES. Considering Hamburg Action 2, 39% of this commitment would be achieved (6,545k kWh/yr committed vs 2,531k kWh/yr estimated to be achieved). If we exclude the aforementioned action 2 in Hamburg from the calculations, 78% of the global commitment is estimated to be reached by month 30 (2,926k kWh/yr committed vs 2,379k kWh/yr estimated to be achieved).
