Summary

BDVe (Big Data Value ecosystem), running from January 2017 through 2020 to support the Big Data Value PPP the contractual agreement between the Commission and industry - in realizing a vibrant data-driven EU economy or, in other words, BDVe will support the implementation of them to be a success.
Led by SAP with the support of Atos, our consortium includes partners that have shown commitment and dedication to the success of the PPP for several years (Siemens, TNO, Tilde, Universidad Politécnica de Madrid, Universitaet Duisburg-Essen, OGILVYONE, Paluno, NU Ireland - Insight, as well as EIT Digital and BDVA). Behind that mission, there are multiple goals to achieve, the most challenging ones are: (1) achieving a more competitive landscape of European Big Data providers, leading to bigger market share; (2) creating the context for a more competitive EU industry in the advent of a data-driven revolution where many traditional players will have to transform their processes and re-think their business if they want to remain completive –or in some cases, just survive-; (3) ensuring the sustainability of investments and actions triggered by the PPP.

Focusing on our first circle - BDVe coordinated 15 Big Data PPP Projects during 2017, this first wave was joined by a second wave at the beginning of 2018, summing today 32 running projects. These projects represent comprehensively an investment of 185 M€ with more than 400 partners and an estimated workforce between 500-800 persons. Doubling the number of projects also means that the number for collaboration is growing exponentially. Exchanging best-practices, reusing software, finding synergies across projects or domains is becoming an exciting but difficult challenge for the BDVe consortium. While the first wave is starting to produce results, we want the second and soon third wave and newcomers to benefit from their know-how.

Work performed

\"Communication is key to achieve the BDVe mission: we established a comprehensive BDV PPP Communication & Dissemination Strategy, continuously reviewed, coupled with definition, design and application of a common brand and associated marketing elements for the PPP as a whole. This visual identity is reused for all our communication activities including, the Design, creation and exploitation of the common communication channels for the PPP: Website, Social Networks, Newsletter, promotional materials: Printed, Digital, Video.

Early in 2017, BDVe setup 3 boards involving the BDV PPP projects as enablers to leverage possible synergies from three different perspectives: the steering committee involving mainly the projects managers, the technical committee involving mainly the projects technical / scientific directors or architects, and the communication committee involving the leads of the respective leaders for the projects dissemination activities. The different boards met 4 times during the first 18 months of BDVe. The BDVe Advisory board complements these boards to provide an external vision of our actions.

Beyond the PPP projects, our aim is to be the reference for the European Big Data community as a whole. This includes all consortiums working on research and innovation, the industrial partners from the Big Data Value Association and other related associations up to industrials and startups that want to leverage Big Data to fuel their innovation. We initiated collaborations with the ETP4HPC (European TechnologyPlatform for HPC), ECSO (for cybersecurity), AIOTI (for IoT), 5G (through 5G PPP), and the European Factories of the Future Research Association (EFFRA). We develop also collaborations with euRobotics, SPIRE, Research Data Alliance and other International organisations.
BDVe benefits from the networking effect of the PPP projects members, the BDVA community and these relationships to gather and to relay all information using public (eg. Twitter) or private (eg. BDV PPP community hosted on SAP JAM) social channels, newsletters and web, publishing more than 102 news reaching overall circa 3000 professionals specialised in Big Data.

BDVe was also instrumental to support the organization of the European Big Data Value Forum a key European event for industry professionals, business developers, researchers, and policy makers to discuss the challenges and opportunities of the European data economy and data-driven innovation in Europe. The 2017 edition was held in Versailles with the great support of the local organizer INRIA and with a focus to the topic of \"\"Trusted AI in Smart Industry\"\". With more than 800 attendees and the participation of prestigious representatives from the governments (eg. Mounir Mahjoubi, Secretary of State in charge of Digital Affairs (video), European Commission), the industry (eg. Airbus, EDF, Microsoft, SAP, Siemens, Vodafone) and the research and innovation communities (eg. INRIA, Max Planck Institute), the 3 days event proposed a unique flavour of expertise, research insights and real life usage of Big Data technology.

Aside this major yearly event, we organized the Big Data Value Meet-up in Sofia May, 14th-16th with the twofold objective of strengthening collaborations among community members and increasing the visibility and awareness about the PPP in East Europe in general, and Bulgaria in particular. The agenda has combined keynotes and speeches from official Bulgarian representatives, members of the European Commission and industrial players. We had the pleasure of a welcoming video-speech from Commissioner Mariya Gabriel stating great European ambitions for Artificial Intelligence and Big Data in Europe.

We complemented this activity of (co-)organiser by participating and supporting IoT Week 2018 as Media Partners, and by fostering the participation of our community members to round panel and workshops in events such as ICT2018 or the European Conference on Software Architecture (ECS\"

Final results

Since increasing skills in Data Science and bringing new talent to the Data Economy are essential to succeed in the information-driven market. We developed the Educational Hub, the online platform and living repository for European Master and PhD Programmes. This enable to carefully match students interests in key areas, where the big data will have an impact on the industry and where big data will deliver clear business value.

We are developing a one-stop shop for platforms, technologies and solutions. Supply and demand of products and services around Big Data in Europe meet, founded in Research and Innovation activities, including interoperability and standardization.
