Summary

The internet of things (IoT) has a revolutionary potential. A smart web of sensors, actuators, cameras, robots, drones and other connected devices and databases allows for an unprecedented level of control and automated decision-making. The project Internet of Food & Farm 2020 (IoF2020) explores the potential of IoT-technologies for the European food and farming industry.
The goal is ambitious: to make precision farming a reality and to take a vital step towards a more sustainable food value chain. With the help of IoT technologies higher yields and better-quality produce are within reach. Pesticide and fertilizer use will drop and overall efficiency is optimized. IoT technologies also enable better traceability of food, leading to increased food safety and reduction of waste.
Nineteen use-cases organised around five trials (arable, dairy, fruits, meat and vegetables) develop, test and demonstrate IoT technologies in an operational environment all over Europe, with the first prototypes delivered in the first quarter of 2018.
The Use Cases are monitored and supported by expert teams on technology, business and communication. With this IoF2020 has implemented a lean multi-actor approach focusing on user acceptability, stakeholder engagement, re-usability, standardisation and the development of sustainable business models. IoF2020 aims to increase the economic viability and market share of developed technologies, while bringing end-usersâ€™ and farmersâ€™ adoption of these technological solutions to the next stage. The aim of IoF2020 is to build a lasting innovation ecosystem that fosters the uptake of IoT technologies. Therefore, key stakeholders along the food value chain are involved in IoF2020, together with technology service providers, software companies and academic research institutions.

Final results

In the first report period (M1-M18) the 19 use cases delivered their first prototype (MVP), detailed description of the IoT application including all different components, the KPIâ€™s, the value proposition and the work plan for the next MVPs. At the project level all this information has been collected in a general report, technical report and a business report. In the two partner events this information was shared and discussed to stimulate synergy between use cases. Use cases have been supported on technology and business development. A catalogue for re-usable components is implemented and filled in for 2 use cases to be completed in Q3-2018 for all use cases. The open call for additional use cases has been prepared to be launched on July 5th at the IoT week in Bilbao. This open call will bring in 10-15 more Use Cases and expand the ecosystem in new regions and new value chain partners. The project has been presented at numerous stakeholder events in EU and outside Europe. Communication about the project and its first results is supported by a state-of-the-art website and multi media exposure.
