The DESIR project is dedicated to strengthening the sustainability of the Digital Research Infrastructure for the Arts and Humanities (DARIAH). Sustaining existing knowledge in digital arts and humanities in Europe and enabling new one in the context of DESIR involves a goal-oriented set of measures in order to first, maintain, expand and develop DARIAH in its capacities as an organisation and technical research infrastructure; secondly, to engage its members further, and measure and increase their trust in DARIAH; and thirdly, to expand the DARIAH network in order to further integrate new regions and communities. These objectives are translated into six challenges:
1. Dissemination: Communicate DARIAH services and tools in Europe and position DARIAH on a global level. High-profile workshops in the US and Australia are planned;
2. Growth: Enlarge DARIAH by integrating new European members into the DARIAH community;
3. Technology: Include new services in the infrastructure covering novel technologies;
4. Robustness: The governance sustainability will be reinforced through business plans and straightened core services;
5. Trust: Measure the impact of DARIAH in new communities and develop strategies to increase trust and confidence;
6. Education: Assess the skills base of the infrastructure and carry out training measures.
\"WP1 - Management
DESIR work is divided over seven work packages for which the work performed so far is summarised below. This Work Package addresses the overall legal, contractual, administrative and financial execution of the project in accordance with the Grant Agreement. During the first half of the project WP1 established the communications infrastructure and coordinated the overall project with respect to networking, scientific and dissemination issues. An amendment has been submitted to include two additional partners in the Consortium, the University of Sheffield and the University of Neuchâtel.
WP2 - Dissemination and Innovation
Besides the overall dissemination of project results, WP2 is preparing three high-profile international workshops with prestigious partners. Date and venues have been settled. The events will take place in the second half of the project as follows: 13-15 September 2018 at Stanford University, 2-4 October 2018 at Library of Congress, 27-29 March 2019 at Australian Research Data Commons. Those workshops will be the occasion to promote DARIAH tools and services, to initiate collaborations, and above all to exchange knowledge and experience in digital scholarship on an international level.
WP3 - Growth
This work package is concerned with the enlargement of the DARIAH membership targeting five European Union\'s countries (Switzerland, Spain, Finland, Czech Republic and Great Britain, until \"\"Brexit\"\" takes definitely place) and Israel. Each country developed a specific accession strategy based an accurate analysis of their domestic research infrastructure ecology. The accession process is continuously monitored and targeted support is provided by DARIAH boards. Moreover, participation to the DARIAH National Coordinators Committee has been exceptionally granted to DESIR partners not yet members of DARIAH involved in this Work Package.
WP4 - Technology
The aim of WP4 is to ensure DARIAH’s long-term sustainability by technologically enhancing DARIAH’s research infrastructure and services. A gap-analysis of the current DARIAH infrastructure, focusing on text analytic services, scholarly content management, entity-based search and visualisation was conducted and led to identify missing tools or services in DARIAH and potential for improvement of existing tools and services. An important output has been the delivery of a DARIAH Technical Reference which is a collection of basic guidelines and references for development and maintenance of infrastructure services within DARIAH and beyond. The work carried out in the first half of the project will lead to a Code Sprint based on conceptual models provided by the technology partners.
WP5 - Robustness
This work package is concerned with the development of a sustainable structure and governance of DARIAH, by means of a business plan, a centralised helpdesk, and thematic workshops with other ERICs. DARIAH initiated a work with other Social Sciences and Humanities ERICs to address common technical issues and started to build a concept for a marketplace where scholars can find tools, services, datasets, repositories, learning and teaching material.
WP6 - Trust
The aim of this work package is to address the sustainable development of DARIAH through the key questions of credibility and trust in DARIAH’s activities. So far, two complementary activities have been carried out: at the beginning of the project, a survey to measure trust an diversity in cross-disciplinary DARIAH communities had been designed. In a second phase, the survey had been shared with DARIAH users and potential users. The outcomes led to a comprehensive report which will serve a basis for policy recommendations and implementation strategies.
WP7 - Education
Training and education is one of the key activities of DARIAH and within DESIR the objective is to maintain and expand services of the DARIAH Virtual Competency Centre Research and Education Liaison and all other relevant teac\"
DARIAH integrates digital arts and humanities research and activities from across Europe, enabling transnational and transdisciplinary approaches. In particular, it provides value to its members and stakeholders through the validation and sharing of data, services and tools; by providing training and education opportunities; by enabling ‘bottom-up’ organisation around emerging research needs; and through the exercise of foresight and policy engagement. Through these activities, DARIAH promotes the further development of research methods in the arts and humanities, documenting the state-of-the-art, supporting the preservation and curation of research data with a focus on particular challenges including diversity, provenance, multimedia collections and granularity, and acting as a coordinator and integrator for a diverse community of practice. The DESIR project aims to ensure DARIAH’s long term sustainability in terms of achieving public policy impacts by means of an enlarged membership, more robust and effective research services, international agreements with global partners, and a more active role in the innovation chain.
