Summary

Dental students use the Internet as the first point of contact when searching for learning materials to assist their studies, including clinical procedures. Such content may have a low evidence-based background and may be misleading. One learning medium that is rated highly by students is the use of online videos content. The aim of this project was to create short video learning materials which are peer-reviewed and accessible for dental students. Their creation and use serve as an example to be used in dentistry and maybe other areas of knowledge. It was important to understand what kind of content students watch to study online so a survey was submitted to dental students from Europe, Oceania and South America.

Work performed

During the settlement period (months 1-2) the literature was reviewed and the research refined. Social media interactions were discussed and the Completion of the ethical review was achieved. WP1 (months 1-7) – Consisted of the completion of Design, implementation, data obtaining and analysis of the questionnaires. Deliverables WP1 also included all three questionnaires deliveries and software training. WP2 (months 3-14) was used to plan (basic, preclinical and clinical content), produce, edit, distribute and analyse the Instructional Videos. During this period (WP1 and 2) dental educational content found on YouTube (UK) content was checked and evaluated. After that, dental students were called to join the WP3, Face-to-face Interviews (months 11-19). Each student that agreed to participate had the interview recorded and transcript. These answers served to support findings obtained in other phases of the study and to improve the production of new educational content. Multiple dental schools were contacted and the questionnaire used with the British students was submitted to dental schools from different continents (months 19-24). The questionnaire was answered in English by some dental schools but had to be translated into Spanish and Portuguese. Each international collaborator was represented by one of its teachers, responsible to obtain local ethical approval and deliver the questionnaire locally. Public Engagement and Dissemination activities (months 1-24) were inserted within the project activities. The scientific community was reached through Oral communications in international conferences, seminars and symposiums, publications in peer-review indexed journals, the final report concerning the completion of the project and visits to other dental courses. Non-scientific dissemination and public engagement actions consisted of regular social media posts, Workshop Day, Green Heart event, Open wide Exhibition.

Final results

Expected results were 1. check how ICTs are being used on European dental courses, 2 Produce dental educational content, 3 Understand what dental content students want to watch, 4 find European dental schools interested in collaborating and 5 disseminate the results to scientific and non-scientific communities. At the end of the period, the Project range was expanded to worldwide. Several surveys were sent to dental students in different countries. England, Wales, France, Greece, Brazil, Chile, Ivory Coast and Australia students have already responded. USA, Spain, Italy and Malaysia are still obtaining ethical permission. Dental education videos were produced. Teachers were trained and the guidelines designed were presented during the European Dental Association Annual Meeting. The proposal of a postgrad course on innovation in education is being elaborated. Social media was used to spread the findings, we have presented a Workshop in Malaysia and invited by Euraxess to present a webinar. Non-scientific community participate actively during the Green Heart event at the University of Birmingham and the Open wide exhibition at Birmingham Dental Hospital, called “Filling like a Dentist” (1/7/19 until 1/10/19). Three papers were published in peer-reviewed journals and one book chapter was published, but scientific publications are still in progress. The project developed guidelines for future video creation by educators and translation to other disciplines is possible. The ER learned a range of multidisciplinary skills including video creation, qualitative research methodology and soft skills. The host institution benefited from how to embed ICT into dental education and with new partners. The improving of the online video content quality will benefit dental students, teachers, and patients.
