Summary

Repro-light (“Re-usable and re-configurable parts for sustainable LED-based lighting systems”) tries to transform Europe\'s LED lighting industry by the development of an intelligent LED-luminaire, with a modular, stackable architecture, and by changing their opinion of the LED luminaire as a generic, disposable objects, into thinking of them as a customised, sustainable product, with high functional value.

Prices for LED luminaires are rapidly falling, while the market’s need for customised products continues to increase. The attempts so far to make LED luminaires modular have mainly been restricted to retro-fitting the light sources. Repro-light is breaking the rules of traditional luminaire design, by using innovative technologies and materials.

The Repro-light consortium is perfectly suited to be the spearhead of this lighting “revolution” as the entire value chain is represented, and the consortium is structured around a sound industrial backbone. ITZ, the R&D centre of TRILUX who are a driving force of the European lighting industry are on-board together with manufacturers of basic products (BJB, GZE, ROHNER), innovative members of the lighting industry (BART, LUGER) as well as experts on lighting sustainability and Life Cycle Assessment (IREC) and the Social Sciences (MU-ENG).

Work performed

\"Requirements for the luminaire were determined. Based on product development, the production scheme is derived. All is accompanied by an environmental assessment.

During requirements determination (WP2), the product service system was analyzed first (detailed picture of involved actors). With a specific questionnaire (Technology Acceptance Model) > 1000 people have ben reached. Requirements for customizability + light quality were determined. The connection between user acceptance + personalization has been assessed (literature, experience + studies of BART, ITZ). 5 focus groups to ensure highest possible lighting quality. Technical requirements, especially concerning exchangeability and configurability were elaborated.

Predevelopment of modular architecture was performed (WP3). Interchangeability of modules, including a simple mechanical fixation of the LED boards as well as a special electrical plug connector, was developed.

First concepts for an automated production line were developed (WP4). The development of an online luminaire configurator has started (the user can individually configure the components of the luminaire for his application; data will be sent directly to the automatic production line).

All development steps were accompanied by an environmental assessment, including the evaluation of new materials with respect to recyclability and use phase scenarios.

BART did
- coordination +administration (WP1)
- contributed to WP2 Specifications
- photometrical, visual and non-visual requirements definition (WP2)
- started luminaire development, especially optics (WP3).

IREC´s work (WP5 Environmental Assessment) results so far in Del.5.1 \"\"Evaluation of new materials with respect to recyclability aspects\"\". The data collection for the comparative LCA has begun.

BJB (WP3) focused on
- single and interchangeable optics on PCB boards
- functional coatings, electromechanical interfaces
- mechanical fixation
- special plug connectors
- automated pilot production line.

ITZ elaborated
• WP1/2 – modular architecture concepts.
• WP2 – technical + photometrical + quality requirements. (D2.2)
• WP2 – Focus Group; Internet survey. (D2.2)
• WP3 – modular architectures. First samples available.
• WP3 – configurator for modular luminaires.

TXKG/TGM worked on
- end-user survey (WP2)
- IT-Programming (configurator) (WP3)
- design, build up + testing of 2 manufacturing equipment’s (WP4)
- set up of several samples, prototypes tools for luminaire + components (WP3)
- first drafts of automated production steps of the final assembly (WP4)
- programming luminaire configurator (WP3/4).

MU-ENG as WP2 Leader:
T2.1: Technology Acceptance. PSS (Product Service System), Technology Acceptance Models (TAM) has been developed. The survey finally reached >1000 people (defined in proposal = 100).
T2.2: Requirements for personalization (user acceptance + personalization). 5 focus groups.
D2.1 Stakeholder & Technology Acceptance Report, D2.2 Requirements Specification, D2.3 User insights briefing report submitted.

LUGER:
- Communication + Dissemination, updates + results through Internet, Newsletters, Social Media Channels and at Events.
- Quality Engineering Support of WP2, WP3 with QFD Methodology.
- Continuous screening of modular lighting solutions state.
- IP analysis process to compare development strategies of global manufacturers.
D7.1 Communication Plan delivered.

ROHNER:
- Literature + technical research on wireless technologies
- documentation + classification (Knowledge Base & Wiki)
- Bluetooth Mesh - light node - demo installation
- software components for nodes
- combined LED & driver PCB - the \"\"illuminated Driver\"\" (prototype).

GZE:
- product requirements AM/3DP (Additive Manufacturing/3D Printing)
- Design for AM/3DP in WP3 Modular Luminaire Architecture (MLA), integation of AM/3DP components (functional + decorative features; individualization).
- Identifications of requirements, materials, tech\"
