We are building a radar for cells: a microwave-based instrument that can automatically and quickly extract size and shape properties of single cells.
If such an instrument could be built, then early screening of cancer and personalised chemotherapy can be accomplished.
The overall objectives of the project is to obtain electromagnetic signatures of individual cells, normal or cancerous, and construct their images from these electromagnetic signatures. One the shape properties become available, then different electrical and image-based technique to discriminate cancerous cells from normal cells will be applied.
So far, we have been able to detect single cells with the first few modes of our instruments and correlated them with optical microscopy images.
We want to obtain all-electrical images of single cells until the end of the project.
