Summary

Wardiam Perimeter is a disruptive perimeter intruder detection technology focused mainly on the protection of critical infrastructures. Based on the patented Controlled Magnetic Field Ontech’s Technology, this is able to provide the most valuable features required by the security market.
Critical infrastructures include among others transportation, public services, energy or health care. The global Critical Infrastructure Protection (CIP) market is projected to value €58.5 billion in 2016, and to reach €74.4 billion by 2026.
Key forces behind this development are rising demand for security against terrorist attacks coupled with favorable government regulations for security next to the increasing need to reduce manpower costs. Increasing investments for infrastructure development has widened the scope for the growth of the perimeter security market. The current perimeter protection systems like optical fiber or microwave available in the market suffer from drawbacks associated with false alarms (>40% false alarms on average) since they are unable to differentiate between humans, objects and animals. And existing technologies are not efficient in operation because sensors and cameras need to be always operational to be prepared in case of intrusion/no intrusion (contributing to 60%-80% energy inefficiency).
Wardiam Perimeter system is Ontech’s new product for industrial security specifically targeting critical infrastructures. It is able to do surveillance of large areas close to a building or walls. The sensors monitor the environment continuously and trigger an event when it detects a person in the surrounding and followed by another trigger in the case there is an intrusion.
This technology is able to overcome most of the problems that current systems have, thanks to its advantages:
- preventive detection (threats are detected even before they have been carried out),
- discriminative (CMF technology is able to distinguish if intrusion is provoked by a human, an animal or an object),
- hidden system (technology can be installed inside the fence),
- differentiating between distinct alarm levels (grade of threat can be measured distinguishing between loitering, touching or climbing the fence),
- tracking and identification of the intruders (collaborative tracking of the intruders), and
- personal data protection law friendly (cameras can be turned off while there are no threats).

Work performed

From the technical point of view, the most important development carried out during this period have been the following:
- Several communication protocols have been analysed.
- Wardiam Perimeter have been optimized for its integration into large infrastructures.
- In order to integrate Ethernet communications, increase the device ruggedness and add the new controlled magnetic sensor, a new hardware has been developed.
- The video tracking algorithm has been improved, defining a new software architecture with filters that enhance the recognition of intruders with bad conditions.
- Further, an application that allows the visualization of the system information and state has been developed.
- Several installations have been deployed and different tests have been performed in all of them. Response of the system has been studied and characterize the changes obtained in it.
- An exploratory analysis of the database has been made, analysing its size, structure, variables and experiments individually.
- From these work, different patterns have been extrapolated from each behaviour, and also the influence of vegetation and noise on the sensor’s signal have been studied.
- Algorithms that classify each event have been hugely improved using machine learning techniques. This new approach of include artificial intelligence in the signal processing, has reported a lot of advantages.
- We have worked on the process of product optimization for its mass production, and the certification process, in order to get the homologation according to the CE mark and the UNE-EN 50131 and UNE-EN 50130 standard, related to intrusionand hold-up systems.
- The certification process for EU regulations has concluded satisfactorily and the product is ready to be launched to the UE market.
- Regarding US regulations, FCC mark has been obtained and UL certification process have been started.
Regarding the communication tasks, the main activities carried out have been the following:
- Wardiam Perimeter website and social media networks has been updated with news.
- Promotional documentation as datasheets, quickguides and manuals and a promotional video have been made. Also merchandising material as tshirts, pendrives… have been manufactured.
- Two articles based on the technology developed in the project has been written. None of them have been published due to patent processes.
- 4 press releases related to the project have been launched.
- Several meetings with potential clients, including demo at Ontech showrooms, have taken place.
- Two more expositors have been built in order to improve data collection as well as to show Wardiam Perimeter advantages to potential clients.
- Two workshops with people from the University and Emasesa has taken place.
- Ontech has attended four trade fairs of security technology worldwide.
- Ontech has become a member of the following associations: SIA, RIH and AES.
Finally, periodical meetings for technical and strategic coordination have taken place and reports for deliverables and other management tasks have been made.

Final results

The technologies behind other intrusion detection systems are dominated by the following technologies:
- Active infrared or Passive infrared sensor: works by emitting IR radiation, if radiation is disturbed, an alarm is triggered. It is a less expensive solution and easy to maintain (€150 for a 2m range sensor) but is not very effective in outdoor or bright areas and prone to false alarms (>70%).
- Microwave: they generate an electromagnetic field between transmitter and receiver, creating a volumetric detection zone. If the field is disturbed, an alarm is triggered. This technology has a high range of sensors (4m) but is prone to false alarms (>40%) and the sensors show reduced functionality in short irregular perimeters.
- Accelerometer sensors: works by measuring the change in state of accelerometer. This technology is a cost-effective solution (€70 per sensor) but is also prone to false alarms (>40%) and not very effective in outdoor detection.
- Perimeter protection: generates an invisible detection field around buried sensor cables. If an intruder disturbs the field, an alarm is declared. It is able to function in all weather conditions faces a similar rate of false alarms (40%) as the former mentioned technologies.
- Controlled Magnetic Field (CMF): Ontech has developed this patented technology, which uses a magnetic field and combines it with cameras and a software using automatic recognition algorithms to differentiate animals, humans and objects and reduces the rate of false alarms to 10%.
Wardiam Perimeter is a solution with a longer detection range (20m/sensor) that solves these drawbacks with reduced false alarms (<10%), the ability to work in all terrains and weather conditions with discrimination feature that can differentiate animals, humans and objects complemented by preventive feature that sends out an alarm even before intrusion has occurred.
