Summary

Most of solutions aimed to produce heat for industrial processes are powered by fossil fuel or gas, which makes them highly-contaminant. Bioheat for industrial purposes is still a huge unexploited market, especially in those sectors with a high percentage of SMEs as is the case of food and beverage industry.
Our innovative industrial biomass burner, BioBuR+, aims to transform any industry that can convert their conventional coal, diesel, or natural gas boiler into a biomass one at thermal power needs of 3-10 MW. It can use any kind of biomass available, contributing to circular economies by enabling industries to use their own by-products as feedstock for their production plants.

Work performed

During the feasibility study we assessed technical, commercial and financial feasibility. From a technical point of view, a work plan to reach TRL9 is drafted, including risk management and mitigation measures. An intellectual property and regulations analysis was also done and no conflict with our solution was found.
From a commercial point of view, we studied the market and confirmed the need of powerful bioheat solutions that reduce high-dependence from fossil fuels. Food and beverage sector was studied as main target setting a commercialization plan with particular attention to Mediterranean countries, Latin America, USA and Eastern Africa.

Different sales scenarios where evaluated for the first 5 years of the project showing a payback period related to the estimated costs to bring the solution to market between 1.43 and 2-28 years.

Final results

Our innovation has the potential to disrupt the food and beverage industrial sector, where 99.1% of companies are SMEs (aprox. 285,000 companies), which generate almost 50% of this sector’s turnover, and provide 2/3 of the employment, but also consume more than 10% of final energy demand in the EU industry.

Our biomass burner decreases energy costs by substituting conventional fuels for biomass by-products coming from agro-processing industries. BioBuR+ reduces emissions by stimulating industrial symbiosis, i.e., turning one industry\'s by-product into another industry\'s raw material in line with a circular Economy approach.

At the same time, BioBuR+ reduces the dependence of the European food industry in fossil fuel and consequently its vulnerability to prices volatility. Using our biomass burners in the food processing industry will reduce EU diesel consumption by at least 1%, which means savings of €583 million per year in EU, and reinforcing energy security in Europe.
