The ENIGMA project aims at developing smart and enhanced Energy Management (EM), Advanced EPS Control and Optimisation Methods, as well as Modelling and Simulation for aerospace applications in order to design, develop, manufacture, test and integrate an innovative, Centralised Smart Supervisor (CSS) embedding the Enhanced Electrical Energy Management (E2-EM) strategy into the Iron Bird facilities. This strategy will provide optimal management and sharing of available on-board electric power during overloading and failure conditions such that the overload capability requirement for main generators sizing can be removed leading to substantial reduction of generators’ mass.
Within P1, the ENIGMA Consortium successfully submitted and got approved the PDR for the ENIGMA controller. This represented one of the two milestones of the project (MS1). This important milestone was achieved through the collaboration of the Consortium\'s members, the Topic Manager, and external partners of other CfPs (contributing to the ENIGMA project).
The PDR detailed all the apsects related to the assessments of the requirements and specifications of the resulting Centralised Smart Superviros (along with the E2-EM algorithms) with the aim of checking the consistency of the proposed solution with the overall Electrical Power System architecture and concept. In conclusion, a validation plan was proposed in order to define the process for performing the validation of the resulting CSS in different contexts: MIL, HIL, and at Iron Bird level.
Moreover, within P1, the Consortium carried out a successful process of models integration within WP3 involving the partners of other CfPs (ESTEEM, IDEN, and ASPIRE). This process resulted in the obtaining of a full simulation environment to use for testing and assessing the energy management algorithms towards the MIL validation.
ENIGMA will deliver an innovative and smart controller to enable evaluation and investigation of applying E2-EM functionalities and advanced energy management strategies on improved power quality, weight reduction and minimisation of generators overloading and mechanical fatigue in EPDS for Regional Aircraft as required by the REG IADP in Clean Sky 2. The proposed demonstrator, based on E2-EM and advanced energy management strategies is a key element in demonstrating the benefits of E2-EM functionalities and hence enabling the next wave of technology integration for Regional Aircrafts.
The innovative Supervisory Control demonstrator developed within ENIGMA will provide multiple functions including coordination with the smoothing of peak power of regenerative EMA load, and minimisation of generators overloading with predicted benefits on generators\' size and weight (with consequent positive impacts over the CO2 emission)
