Shipping is the backbone of the global economy with 90% of all trade done in shipping.
Regulations aim to reduce shipping Co2 emissions by 50% until 2050, only to stay at current levels.
Ships have to become every 5 years 10% more energy efficient.

Solutions are needed to address the current challenges and problems, which include but are not limited to:
- HIGH COSTS for Operators: as 50-80% of OPEX are fuel costs; Company like MAERSK has 8BN – 15BN USD in fuel costs per year, CMA CGM has 6 BN USD in fuel costs per year
- HIGH EMISSIONS: to fight climate change & global warming
- HEALTH IMPACT - with AIR POLLUTION being the single biggest impact in health according to the World Health Organization
To put this problem into perspective: The 15 largest ships emit as much Particulate Matter as ALL THE CARS IN THE WORLD COMBINED!

With our solution FS MARINE+, we reduce fuel consumption and cut emissions through dynamic & load based injection of Hydrogen / oxygen / water & methanol in the air intake in the RIGHT way. Our Product FS MARINE+ Is the world’s first solution of such technology that got approved on board of a ship.
It is field & lab proven on board of the largest heavy lift crane ship in Europe (Reference & Appreciation Letter available) for 2,5 years and in one of the most prestigious lab (FVTR) in Europe where all major engine manufacturers & component providers go (MAN, MaK, MTU, ABB, BOSCH, etc.)
FS MARINE+ has been able to show and combine unique benefits for retrofit solutions such as:
- 10-20% fuel reduction & Co2 reduction & SOX reduction
- 30-80% NOX reduction
- 40% FSN reduction & PM reduction
- 33% Black Carbon reduction
- Etc.
Customers want to buy our solutions because we reduce OPEX and increase their profitability with 10% guaranteed NET OPEX savings and 3 years ROI with a 5-year standard warranty (extendable to 15 years).

Work performed

During the first 12 months of the project, FUELSAVE has developed and tested new approaches to enhance the core FS MARINE+ technology - a patent pending carbonfiber-sandwich-electrode and an innovative electrolyser rinse element (WP1). Based on these improvements, FUELSAVE designed the pilot installation unit V5 and finalized the risk-assessment together with the largest engine manufacturer MAN Energy solutions SE. In order to obtain the class approval from the largest marine classification society DNV GL (WP1) to build and install this FS MARINE V5 unit onboard a vessel from our pilot customer SAL Heavy lift GmbH, a leading heavy crane lift shipping company, based in Hamburg, Germany.
In Parallel FUELSAVE designed and build a prototype containerized FS MARINE+ unit V6 (WP1) ahead of schedule. This unit is currently prepared for approval and testing deployment onboard a container vessel of one of the leading European container shipping companies.
In-line with the technical progress, FUELSAVE was continuously working on the project and company communication (WP2), filing several competition applications, speaking on renown shipping and climate conferences and presenting the unique V6 containerized FS MARINE+ prototype on the world’s largest shipping event, the SMM 2018 in Hamburg, supported by a high-level 3D, technical visualisation (WP2).
To ensure the technical roll-out of FS MARINE+, as a core activity of business and partnership development, FUELSAVE has done thorough market research and competitor analysis, build up strong relationships with leading marine service providers, classification societies and engine manufacturers (WP3). To gain even more market traction and raise product awareness, FUELSAVE has established a comprehensive reseller and agency network with more than a dozen partners covering major markets worldwide – North and South Europe, USA, Asia, Africa and India (WP3).
Due to the huge interest in FS MARINE+ and its unique customer benefits, FUELSAVE has adapted its commercialisation strategy and is meanwhile in constant contact with several shipping companies, providing news updates, business case analysis, and advanced project designs (WP4). Among these customers are the absolute world market leaders in container, heavy lift, cruise and inland shipping resulting in a sales funnel of more than 3,000 vessels.
All the project management tasks have been carried out in a separate work package (WP5), with an important focus on developing and monitoring FUELSAVE IP, filing new patent applications and extending already existing patents to the TOP40 industrial countries worldwide.

Final results

Progress beyond the state of the art
- Establishing Hydrogen & Methanol / Water injection as a widely recognized and accepted efficiency enhancement to reduce fuel consumption and cut emissions.
- Positioning FS MARINE+ as an applicable and powerful retrofit solution, helping customers to reduce OPEX and increase profitability while saving the environment – for their existing fleet! Not only for their newbuilds.

Expected results until the end of the project:
- To proof the previous lab and field proven benefits and establish a minimum of 10% net OPEX savings, along with considerable emissions savings (FSN & Black Carbon reduction, NOX reduction, Co2 reduction, SOX reduction, etc)
