Summary

The main problem the project addresses is how to cool data centres that are growing in number, size and energy density where traditional air cooling solutions are rapidly becoming inefficient. The importance to the society lies in the fact that AIC24 contributes in lowering the energy consumption of data centres, which already now are consuming 3% of global energy. Overall objective of the project is to evaluate the feasibility of our liquid cooling solution AIC24 (industrialization, scale up, addressable market expansion), technically, commercially & financially.

Work performed

Technical study: designed an industrialization plan to scale up the production & planned a cost control pilot during 2018. Our general work plan is for 24 months (€2.3 M). We will optimize our cassettes to off-the-shelf servers & make different versions of the module. We did a technical risk analysis & set as a clear objective circularity and recyclability of our solution.

Market study confirmed to us the rapid expansion of our target market & validated our exploitation strategy. We understood that the Blockchain entities should not be our main target segment because their business model is very volatile and a low cost version would sell better in that segment. The energy-reuse is a very interesting value proposition for all client segments. IP landscape assessment confirmed our FtO. Competition analysis concluded that we are 1-2 years ahead in technology development. We know now the regulatory hurdles ahead and how to tackle them. Dissemination plan: budgeted 15 events for the next two years. Updated & budgeted the validated market entry plan.

We did a cost-benefit analysis to take AIC24 to TRL9. We will later gain 3 times bigger EBT in five years after the end of the project than without it. Our ROI five years after the project will be 15 euros per each euro invested. We updated the business plan, including the scalability of our business, business model (canvas) & value chain.

Final results

We finished successfully a pilot on robot welding. We are drafting a long-term cooperation agreement with our manufacturing partner. Our co-founder, Rolf Brink is currently on the advisory board for the development next chip development at Intel where he has an excellent opportunity to influence the hardware manufacturer’s decision makers. We are planning a pilot project with Eneco in order to demonstrate the “heat re-use” case for heating in DC environment, which will take us one step closer to circular economy.
