Summary

The overall objective of the project OCSIC - the Optical Coding System of the Information Channel is to develop and prepare for the market of a completely new technology for effective protection of the integrity and reliability of data transmitted by optical fibers through the use of information coding in the phase and polarization of light pulses in the physical layer of the fiber.

Nowadays, millions of kilometers of fiber optic cables are spanning across the world, carrying incredible amount of critical financial, governmental, defense, medical as well as personal information. Deploying fiber optic cables in itself is extremely expensive, and investing further in the security of these cables (via area surveillance and mechanical access control, fencing, CCTV monitoring etc.) increases the overall cost to a great extent. Developing intelligent physical layer fiber security solutions at affordable price is therefore an imperative trend and an urgent market need.

ZAZ innovation is exactly such an intelligent solution providing high level of data protection (which with current level of computer technology cannot be deciphered in less than 20 years), optical fiber interruption monitoring, detection of violation location with high accuracy, fast data transfer with easy installation – all of this much cheaper than existing solutions. The solution is dedicated to companies handling sensitive information, military, governmetal, financial, and critical infrastructure sectors in EU and NATO countries.

Work performed

During the feasibility study, the following activities have been conducted:
• Market potential (size and growth) analysis
• Analysis of barriers to entry
• ZAZ’ readiness to enter the particular market (based on interviews with potential customers and distributors)
• Financial feasibility analysis
• Development of further Implementation Plan

Final results

Presently, Fiber Optics (FO) transmissions in the physical layer are bit-coded by means of modulation of radiation intensity. The protection of FO connections is most often carried out with the use of FO sensor systems, in particular interferometers or scattering sensors. Current activities in the area of data security focus on development of encryption data methods while maintaining the classical methods of transmission and protection.
The ZAZ solution will significantly stand out from the competition on global level thanks to its features:
• The optical fiber interruption monitoring – allowing detection of interference during the transmission of optical signals in optical fibers, at the moment of direct occurrence of the interference in the transmission fiber used. The variable environmental impact on the signal transmission will be eliminated. The automatic alarm response will make the possibility of capturing sensitive information virtually fall to 0.
• Lower costs – by cheaper solution itself and absence of need of using additional FO lines (which is a requirement in the present systems)
• Easy installation – ZAZ solution will be offered in miniaturized form, ready to be installed in racks in server rooms. Device will be using present FO lines without the need for additional investment in the ICT infrastructure. The installation and testing process will be fast and user-friendly.
• The detection of violation location
• Fast data transfer
