Summary

In the EU, buildings are responsible for 40% of energy consumption and 36% of CO2 emissions. Up to 40% of a building electricity use is accounted for by lighting , however it is often in places where it is not needed or inappropriate for the conditions. Almost 90% of the energy generated by an incandescent bulb and 50% of the energy generated by CFL (Compact Fluorescent) is released as heat, not light. . In the current economic climate, European businesses face challenges to reduce the energy expenditure in an effort to reduce the overall carbon footprint and rising energy costs. Large businesses will therefore be willing to adopt our lighting solution as the WIISAS system represents an opportunity to generate 90% energy savings, while avoiding the in-efficient and unnecessary costs associated with existing solutions.

Valtavalo has developed a state-of-the-art system to enable businesses to optimize their lighting systems by reducing the electricity consumption by 90%. WIISAS is the only system in market which is retrofittable and modular with a GUILess installation. The retrofittable and nature allows for partial upgrades to lighting to gradually increase energy efficiency, compared to solutions which rely on complete re-wiring for implementation. The GUILess installation allows for grouping and re-grouping of devices without the need for a Phone, Laptop or any other external device.

The objectives of the feasibility study were to evaluate the technical and regulatory requirements for the introduction of the WIISAS system into the European market, identify and finalize an optimized value chain, and design the validation activities including securing sites for pilot trials, with the ultimate objective to become the industry leader in wireless LED lighting solutions.

Work performed

Valtavalo performed a complete analysis of the technical and business potential for the WIISAS. The interest of multiple offices, suppliers and distributors were raised and in certain cases, secured across EU, allowing Valtavalo to further scale up and prepare for final pilot trials. As a result, Valtavalo have secured a value chain which will be capable of delivering the WIISAS to distributors and wholesalers after commercialization of the products. Valtavalo also identified the necessary engineering optimizations needed for a safe and effective product to be used in a pilot study. From a regulatory perspective, Valtavalo identified the regulatory certifications required to achieve the CE Mark for the WIISAS system in Europe, designed a suitable pilot trial for in-field validation of the WIISAS, and secured the interest of 2 business centres to act as deployment and validation sites during the Phase 2 innovation project. Furthermore, Valtavalo calculated detailed five year financial projections for commercialisation and analysed the financial and infrastructure requirements for achieving global sales.

Final results

The expected outcome is to finalize the designs for production of the WIISAS system, and perform pilot trials for data collection. As a result, the WIISAS system will be ready for regulatory approvals to commercially launch the WIISAS system. The WIISAS system will have a significant impact on the energy efficiency of large buildings by optimising the usage of lighting and providing flexibility to group the lights as and when required. The system and solution will also provide substantial savings to commercial buildings, manufacturing units, factories etc.
