Summary

Public Website:
The ECWRTI project sets a leading industrial example by demonstrating the scale-up of the EColoRO concept. The EColoRO concept is ground breaking because it offers both a technically and an economically viable solution against low investment costs that closes the water cycle in the industry, achieving an unprecedented sustainability performance.

In the ECWRTI project the EColoRO concept will be demonstrated on full industrial scale in the textile sector. The core of the EColoRO technique is electrocoagulation, which enables the removal of 93 to 96 percent of the dyes and pigments in textile wastewater. Membranes can then be used to fully purify the water via ultrafiltration or reverse osmosis. As a result, up to 90 percent of the water can be reused. About 10 percent will be lost due to concentrated waste stream or escapes via evaporation.

The new technology has two major advantages: it enables textile mills to reduce fresh water consumption by up to 90 percent, and it lowers their wastewater treatment costs. Other advantages include relatively low energy consumption, no additional chemicals, and no required changes to existing processes. EColoRO’s innovative approach integrates electrocoagulation with systems that are already being used in industrial applications, accelerating the step to commercial market implementation when the project completes.

Work performed

During the first 18 months of the ECWRTI project a complete EColoRO modular wastewater treatment system on pilot scale for condition screening at customers has been delivered. The pilot is designed for single-step scale-up prediction to the full industrial scale. The tests with the pilot are crucial as in this phase all possible production campaign scenarios are inventoried together with the production facility involved and a pilot test schedule is defined, to cover all extreme process settings.
