Summary

EXCELL foresees the collaboration of academics from 4 European countries (Hungary, Germany, UK, Belgium) in the multidisciplinary topic of Big Data Applications for Cyber-Physical Systems in Production and Logistics Networks. The main scientific and innovation focus of EXCELL was devised both from world-wide tendencies and local requirements (expressed by the regional smart specialization strategies-S3), departing from the present competences of the cooperating partners (SZTAKI, Fraunhofer-FIT, Aston and KU Leuven).

Main project actions focus on:
• Knowledge acceleration through transnational secondments and training sessions in 8 selected Priority Research Fields (PRFs) and 6 Complementary Skills,
• Supporting exploitation of research results and user-driven innovation,
• Augmenting scientific impact actions through key publications and active participation in the scientific discourse,
• Dissemination and sustainable innovation.

The main strategic objectives of EXCELL are:
(1) Progress in research quality,
(2) Enhance human capital,
(3) Increase visibility and international reputation of staff/institutions involved,
(4) Increase potential for technology transfer and cooperation with industry,
(5) Foster international collaboration,
(6) Better integration in the European Research Area,
(7) Contribute to better public understanding of science and scientific literacy.

Regarding our scientific objectives, we aim to:
• Contribute to the development of an industry-relevant research topic (Big Data Applications for Cyber-Physical Systems in Productions and Logistics Networks), high both on the EC H2020 agenda and Hungary’s S3 strategy,
• Raise the scientific profile in eight selected Priority Research Fields and several Complementary Skills of staff and institutions involved,
• Enhance the dynamic research environment and collaborative links with industry to support exploitation of research results and user-driven innovation.

Work performed

In overall, for RP2 the following achievements can be highlighted:
• 17 staff visits and 8 scientific and complementary skills trainings,
• 10 scientific publications elaborated (7 already published and 3 accepted for publication),
• 2 journal special issues edited,
• 10 participation actions in scientific events,
• 53+ news updates on the project web-site,
• 2 posters,
• the EXCELL Flipboard magazine updated,
• 8 workshops organization and/or workshops attendances,
• 14 press releases,
• 5 consortium meetings,
• coordinators‘ day attendance,
• 7 deliverables completed.

Final results

The majority of actions taken in EXCELL resulted in increased impact on consortium members’ knowledge and on recognition within the scientific community, owing mostly to secondments of scientific staff, joint publications, workshops and jointly edited special issues of journals.
Secondments of scientific staff in the form of bilateral or multilateral knowledge exchange focusing on specific problem domains, as well as longer stays for training in a wider domain or skills, have contributed to strengthening and widening the knowledge of consortium members, both in the project’s priority research fields and awareness of their interdisciplinary connections, as well as in a number of complementary skills supporting rewarding research and innovation in the core scientific domains.
Joint publications have shed light on challenges and applications where different expertise areas and domain-specific perspectives of consortium members can be meaningfully combined (e.g., de-facto limitations of industrial practice and “hard” requirements of IT security). Featuring these insights in publications have resulted in increased awareness of the interdependencies across domains within the scientific community, as well as in recognition of consortium members in each other’s established academic circles. The joint edition of journal special issues has also contributed to the inclusion of consortium members into each other’s scientific communities. Impact of collaboration in the public sector, education and industry was reached by organising open workshops and knowledge transfer events.
